🎶 In Peru, a song can bring generations to their feet.

A familiar melody begins, hands find the rhythm, and someone steps forward to dance. On October 31, Día de la Canción Criolla, we celebrate the music that continues to bring people together across Peru.

Rooted in Lima’s neighborhoods and the cultural life of the Peruvian coast, canción criolla carries stories of love, longing, and belonging. The work of composers such as Felipe Pinglo and Chabuca Granda remains part of a living repertoire, treasured in family gatherings and performed in peñas where musicians and audiences share the occasion.

That musical heritage also finds expression in the marinera. In performances with the Peruvian Paso horse, the dancer’s flowing skirt meets the horse’s measured movements under the guidance of its chalán. Their coordination gives the music a graceful, visible form.

For travelers, these encounters offer an opportunity to appreciate the people behind a tradition: the skill of a musician, the expression of a dancer, and the years of practice that make a performance appear effortless.

🐾 In a ring-tailed lemur troop, the females lead the way.

They hold the highest ranks, while grooming helps strengthen bonds and calls keep companions in contact. Those familiar striped tails have a purpose, too: raised like flags as the troop moves, they help its members stay together.

On World Lemur Day, we celebrate these remarkable animals and the island they call home.

Madagascar rewards the curious traveler with encounters that deserve time and attention. Watching a troop of ring-tailed lemurs offers a glimpse into a busy social world, where a familiar call or a moment spent grooming reveals something of the relationships within the group.

Their future, however, depends on what happens beyond these encounters. Habitat loss continues to threaten ring-tailed lemurs in southern and southwestern Madagascar, making the protection of their remaining forests essential.

Our special thanks go to the Malagasy communities, guides, researchers, and conservationists working to safeguard lemurs and their habitat. Their knowledge and commitment help preserve an extraordinary part of the island’s natural heritage for generations to come.

💜 In Lima, October has a color of its own.

Purple robes fill the streets as devotees accompany the Señor de los Milagros, the Lord of Miracles. Incense rises around the procession, hymns carry through the crowd, and teams of bearers shoulder the sacred image along its route.

On October 28, we honor a tradition whose roots reach back to colonial Lima. In Pachacamilla, an enslaved man of African origin painted an image of Christ on a wall. The devotion that grew around it became an enduring part of the city’s identity, carried forward by generations of families and religious brotherhoods.

For travelers, this is an opportunity to encounter Lima through the people who give its traditions life. The care of the bearers, the voices of the singers, and the devotion of those walking alongside reveal the human commitment behind the procession.

October has its familiar flavors, too. Turrón de Doña Pepa, the syrup-rich sweet topped with colorful candies, is a cherished part of the season.

For Aṉangu, Uluṟu is home. 🌄

On October 26, we mark 41 years since the title deeds to Uluṟu–Kata Tjuṯa National Park were returned to its Traditional Owners. The 1985 Handback followed years of Aṉangu advocacy for recognition of their rights to Country.

The park is jointly managed by Aṉangu and Parks Australia, with a majority of Aṉangu members on its Board of Management. Their knowledge helps guide the care of a landscape where culture and the natural world are deeply connected.

For travelers, that connection changes how we experience this extraordinary place. Alongside its shifting colors and immense desert horizons, there is an opportunity to listen to the people whose home this is and learn from the knowledge they choose to share.

Aṉangu welcome visitors to understand their living culture. Taking time to listen is part of accepting that welcome with respect.

🪷 In Sri Lanka, a simple offering of flowers carries a thoughtful reminder: beauty is fleeting, and life deserves our attention.

On October 25, we send our warmest wishes to everyone observing Vap Poya, a significant day in Sri Lanka’s Buddhist calendar.

Vap marks the completion of Vassa, the monks’ three-month rains retreat, and the beginning of the season of Kathina robe offerings. In the weeks that follow, lay communities come together to offer robes to monks who have completed the retreat, continuing a tradition of generosity that supports monastic life.

On Poya days, devotees visit temples with flowers and oil for lamps, setting aside time for worship and reflection. The flowers themselves hold a meaning: as their blossoms fade, they recall the impermanence of all things.

For travelers, understanding these gestures brings Sri Lanka’s sacred places into closer focus. Their significance lives in the people who care for them and the traditions they continue to practice.

A joey may be old enough to leave the pouch and still depend on its mother for milk. 🦘

On October 24, World Kangaroo Day, we celebrate one of Australia’s most recognizable animals by taking a closer look at how its young grow.

In eastern grey kangaroos, a joey begins venturing out of the pouch at around nine months. It continues nursing as it explores the world outside, becoming independent at about 18 months. The familiar image of a small head peeking from a pouch captures just one stage of that development.

For travelers, watching a mother and joey quietly from a distance offers time to notice these details. Leave them room to move, let them find their own food, and allow the encounter to unfold at their pace.

Look closely at the rosettes in a snow leopard’s coat. Against mountain rock, those markings can make this powerful cat remarkably difficult to see. 🐾

On October 23, International Day of the Snow Leopard, we celebrate a remarkable inhabitant of Asia’s high mountains and the people working to protect it.

Its long, thick tail helps it balance on steep slopes. When it rests, that same tail can wrap around its body for warmth. Even its broad paws help it move through snow. Each detail offers a glimpse of how this cat lives in a cold, rugged world.

Keeping snow leopards in the wild takes close cooperation with the communities who share their mountain home. Conservation efforts work alongside local people to protect the species and help people and snow leopards coexist.

On October 22, Abu Simbel celebrates a sunrise shaped by ancient Egyptian astronomy. ☀️

At dawn, sunlight travels roughly 60 meters through the Great Temple to illuminate three seated figures in its sanctuary: Amun-Ra, Ra-Horakhty, and Ramesses II, represented as a god. Ptah, the fourth figure, remains in shadow.

The alignment, celebrated on October 22 and February 22, brings together the temple’s design and its sacred purpose. Deep inside the monument, the pharaoh takes his place alongside the gods.

Its survival adds another chapter to the story. In the 1960s, the temples were relocated to protect them from the rising waters of Lake Nasser. The solar alignment continues at their new location.

Today, we celebrate the knowledge that shaped Abu Simbel and the international effort that helped preserve it for future generations.

On Dussehra, the Ramayana comes to life before gathered crowds, and towering effigies light up the night. ✨

In parts of India, their burning marks Rama’s victory over Ravana and celebrates the triumph of good over evil.

The story also unfolds through Ramlila, a performance tradition of northern India. Performers retell the epic through song and dialogue. Neighbors make masks, sew costumes and help build the effigies. Members of the audience are invited to sing and take part in the narration.

Recognized by UNESCO as part of humanity’s intangible cultural heritage, Ramlila offers travelers an opportunity to encounter the Ramayana through a community’s own performance traditions.

It’s been a fantastic and productive week in Bishkek for our founder and president, Jorge Salas, meeting with our local teams to refine and expand New Paths Expeditions’ portfolio of journeys across Central Asia.

Exciting new expeditions are in the works, and we look forward to introducing our travelers to even more of this extraordinary region!

With the meetings now behind him, Jorge is preparing to welcome our travelers for The Three Stans: Heart of the Silk Road, a special President’s Expedition through Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan.
