🌌 If your current travels have you in the Northern Hemisphere, or you happen to live there, look up on August 12 and during the early hours of August 13, 2026. You are in for an extraordinary celestial spectacle. And those in the Southern Hemisphere will also have a remarkable night.
You have probably already heard about one or another of the astronomical events taking place, but what makes these dates so remarkable is that several of them coincide: a total solar eclipse, the peak of the Perseid meteor shower, a perfectly timed New Moon, and six planets spread across the early-morning sky.
🌑 On August 12, a total solar eclipse will cross Greenland, Iceland, northern Spain, and a small corner of Portugal. A partial eclipse will also be visible across much of Europe, parts of North America, and northwestern Africa. ☄️ During the night of August 12–13, the Perseid meteor shower will reach its peak. Under a truly dark sky, observers in favorable locations may see dozens of meteors per hour, including some spectacular fireballs. NASA’s guide explains when, where, and how to watch:

✨ The timing could hardly be better. August 12 is also a New Moon, leaving the sky exceptionally dark and providing ideal conditions for watching the Perseids and exploring the stars.
🪐 Before sunrise on August 12, Saturn, Neptune, Uranus, Mars, Jupiter, and Mercury will be spread across the sky. Saturn, Mars, and Jupiter should be the easiest to identify. Mercury will remain close to the horizon, while Uranus and Neptune will require binoculars or a telescope.
For the Perseids, find the darkest location possible, away from city lights. Give your eyes at least 20–30 minutes to adjust, settle into a reclining chair, and watch as much of the sky as possible. No telescope is necessary. Bring binoculars if you would also like to explore the planets and stars.
⚠️ If you are within the eclipse’s visibility zone, never look directly at the Sun without certified eclipse glasses that comply with ISO 12312-2. Ordinary sunglasses are not safe. Never point binoculars, a telescope, or a camera toward the Sun unless a proper solar filter has been securely fitted over the front of the instrument. Unfiltered optics can cause immediate and permanent eye damage.
The eclipse, planets, and meteor shower will not all appear simultaneously in a single view, but their occurrence within the same remarkable period makes August 12 and 13 a wonderful time to pause during your travels, step outside, and look up.
🌌 And if you are traveling or living in the Southern Hemisphere, you are also in for a treat. You will not see the solar eclipse, and the Perseids will be much less prominent, but the New Moon will provide a beautifully dark night with the most spectacular portion of the Milky Way on display. Some Perseid meteors may appear low in the northern sky before dawn, while the planetary gathering will also be visible from many southern locations in the early-morning sky.
