3 more things that probably aren't on your bucket list… but probably should be.

I'm starting to think our favorite travel experiences are the ones that don't make the traditional bucket lists.

This round includes three very different adventures:

🏛️ A National Historical Park — Jamestown + the Colonial Parkway, Virginia

We explored the Colonial Parkway and the historic areas around Jamestown, Williamsburg and Yorktown. If you love history, this is an incredible road trip—but even if you're not a history person, there's something pretty special about being able to experience so much of America's story in one trip.

🌊 A Midwest Beach — Lake Superior, Michigan's Upper Peninsula

Yes, you can have a beach vacation in the Midwest. And yes, we've camped right on the beach.

Lake Superior is enormous, beautiful and completely different from what many people picture when they hear “Midwest.”

🎖️ A Tiny Local Museum — Cantigny Military Museum, Illinois

This is exactly the kind of place I love discovering. A smaller museum that tells stories you might never encounter at a major tourist attraction.

And that's really the point of this series.

Your bucket list doesn't have to be made up of the places everyone else is visiting.

It can be quirky.

It can be local.

It can be educational.

It can be a place you stumbled across on a road trip and ended up absolutely loving.

Sometimes the places that weren't on your list become the places you can't stop talking about.

What if your next family vacation didn't need to be packed with activities to be unforgettable? 🌿

That's one of the things I love about the South Carolina Lowcountry.

Our visit to the Lowcountry Visitor Center near Beaufort was a great reminder of just how much there is to discover in this part of South Carolina—but what I really love about the Lowcountry is the pace.

This is a place where family travel can look like:

🌊 Walking along the waterfront
🏛️ Exploring centuries of history
🌿 Looking for wildlife and enjoying the outdoors
🚲 Taking a bike ride
🍤 Finding a great local meal
🐚 Spending time near the water
🚗 Taking a scenic drive with no particular rush

And that's important to me as a mom.

Not every family vacation needs to be go-go-go from sunrise to bedtime.

Sometimes the best trips are the ones where you have something interesting to do, but also permission to slow down.

We've explored so much of the Lowcountry over the years, from Beaufort and the surrounding area to Hilton Head, the Golden Isles and beyond, and it continues to be one of those places that feels like our kind of travel.

There's history for the curious.

Nature for the adventurous.

Beautiful scenery for the photographer.

Great food for everyone.

And plenty of room for families to simply enjoy being together.

That's the kind of destination I love helping families discover—because the "best" vacation isn't the same for everyone.

Maybe your family wants theme parks and nonstop excitement.

Maybe you want beaches and sunshine.

Or maybe you want Spanish moss, historic streets, wildlife, good food and a slower pace.

Your vacation should fit your family.

🇺🇸 National Virginia Day

Virginia is one of those states that keeps giving you a reason to come back. ❤️

We've explored Virginia from the mountains to the coast—and somehow, every part feels like a completely different trip.

🏔️ Shenandoah National Park for mountain views, hiking, and that incredible Skyline Drive experience.
📜 Virginia's Historic Triangle—Jamestown, Williamsburg, and Yorktown—for some of the most fascinating history in the country.
🏛️ Alexandria for charming streets, waterfront views, and history around every corner.
🌆 Northern Virginia for easy access to Washington, D.C., museums, monuments, and so much more.

And then there are all the little towns, scenic drives, local restaurants, historic sites, and unexpected stops we've discovered along the way.

This picture was taken at the Virginia Welcome Center [near Shenandoah], and I think it's pretty fitting—because Virginia is a state we've been very happy to keep coming back to. ❤️

One of my favorite things about travel is realizing that a destination isn't just one experience. Virginia can be a history trip, a national park adventure, a city getaway, a family road trip—or all of them in the same vacation.

🌿 Some places make you stop and wonder what happened here.

Old Sheldon Church Ruins in South Carolina are one of those places.

Built in the 1750s, the ruins are all that remain of what was once Prince William's Parish Church. The church was damaged during the Revolutionary War and later burned during the Civil War, leaving behind the striking brick columns and walls you can see today.

But standing there, surrounded by enormous live oaks and Spanish moss, the history feels much bigger than the ruins themselves.

And that's what I love about visiting places like this.

You're not just looking at an old building.

You're standing in a place where people lived, worshipped, fought, traveled and built communities more than 250 years ago.

For our family, this was one of those stops where the combination of history and nature made it especially memorable.

The ruins are beautiful—but they're also a reminder that travel doesn't always have to be about the biggest attraction or the most famous destination.

Sometimes it's a quiet road, a historic site, a canopy of live oaks and a chance to imagine the stories that came before us.

And if you're exploring the South Carolina Lowcountry, Old Sheldon Church Ruins are absolutely worth a stop.

I never imagined being in an era where a produce stand would become a legit part of our vacation.

Low Country Laura is one of my favorite versions of myself. Here, I'm sitting in a rocking chair enjoying a slow pace.

Low Country Produce has a few locations, but here we're outside of Beaufort in the countryside. This is literally in the middle of nowhere and is absolutely glorious.

3 things that probably aren't on your bucket list… but SHOULD be.

I'm a big believer that your travel bucket list should have room for the unexpected.

Not every trip needs to be about the most famous attraction.

Sometimes it's a historic cemetery.

Sometimes it's a tiny-town festival.

And sometimes it's… a palace made out of corn. 😂🌽

Here are three unexpected stops we've loved:

🏛️ Oak Grove Cemetery | Brunswick, Georgia
A beautiful historic cemetery where you can slow down and learn more about the people and history that shaped the area.

🐢 International Turtle Festival | Perham, Minnesota
Yes, we traveled to a small town in Minnesota for a turtle festival. And yes, we had a blast. This is exactly the kind of quirky, family-friendly experience that makes a trip memorable.

🌽 The Corn Palace | Mitchell, South Dakota
A building decorated with thousands of bushels of corn. It's weird. It's wonderfully Midwest. And it's absolutely worth a road-trip stop.

And that's what I love about travel.

The places you almost skip can become the stories you tell for years.

So don't be afraid to put something a little weird, a little random or completely unexpected on your itinerary.

Your bucket list doesn't have to look like everyone else's.

🇺🇸Some places make you stop and remember 🇺🇸

Last year, we happened to be visiting Mount Rushmore on September 11th.

Standing beneath those enormous faces of American history on a day when our country remembers one of its darkest moments felt especially meaningful.

Patriot Day isn't about celebrating war or tragedy. It's a day to remember the nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives on September 11, 2001, the first responders who ran toward danger, the families forever changed, and the countless people who showed extraordinary courage in the days that followed.

And being at Mount Rushmore made me think about something I love about travel:

Travel can connect us to history in a way that a textbook simply can't.

You can stand in places where history happened.

You can visit memorials.

You can walk through historic neighborhoods.

You can hear stories from the people who preserve them.

And sometimes, you find yourself standing somewhere completely unexpected on a day that carries enormous meaning.

As a travel advisor, I love helping clients plan the fun vacations—but I also love helping families discover the history, stories, and places that make a destination meaningful.

Those are often the trips that stay with us the longest.

Today, I'm remembering September 11th and honoring the lives, bravery, and sacrifice that should never be forgotten.
