Life of the "Boat People" on the Perfume River
Along the dreamy Perfume River once lived a unique community, the boat people. Their homes were not on land but on small wooden boats, where families spent their entire lives drifting with the water.
They lived by fishing, ferrying, and casting nets. Children grew up on narrow decks, learning to swim before they could read, often with little chance for school. Adults endured hardship, floods brought fear, droughts brought hunger, yet they remained resilient and honest, believing the river would always provide.
Today, most boat people have been resettled on land, but the memory of a "floating village" under the moonlight, with the sound of paddles breaking the silence, is still part of Huế's soul.
