At Ongava, a rhino sighting carries a little more weight.

Both black and white rhino live across the reserve, with individuals closely monitored and protected. The independently funded Ongava Research Centre adds another layer to that work, studying rhino ecology and feeding patterns to help guide how the land is managed.

On 2 August 2027, the moon crosses the sun above Egypt and the sky over the Nile goes dark for more than six minutes.

We built an eleven-night trip around that moment: three nights in Cairo with a private Egyptologist at Giza and the Grand Egyptian Museum, then seven nights aboard the MS Acamar, sailing south from Aswan as temples and villages pass along the banks.

Totality falls near Luxor. Just over six minutes of darkness on a river that has been watched from the water for thousands of years.

This is a fixed departure, 27 July to 7 August 2027, and cabins for eclipse week are already filling. Our Africa specialists can start planning around it now.

Camp Kalahari sits on Brown Hyena Island, at the edge of the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans. Twelve tents. No fences except the one keeping hyena out at night. By day the pans stretch flat and pale to the horizon, and a San guide teaches you to see what’s actually there.

Later, on horseback, the ground turns from white to green. Different rules. Different silence.

It was a phenomenal day out and a true testament to how powerful change can be when communities come together for conservation. We would like to thank Singita and Savanna Private Game Reserve for opening their concessions to the runners.

So many donors came together behind the Ker & Downey®️ Africa team, Sasha, Tamsyn and Marwaan, as they took on the trail. Because of you, OKOA Fund reached its goal in support of the African Pangolin Working Group.

This incredible feat helps contribute towards anti-poaching patrols, camera traps and the rehabilitation of these highly poached animals. This is what community-powered conservation looks like.
