Trophy trout season is firing!

Our opening Trout and About weekend of the season really delivered. The combination of guided fishing on private, expertly managed waters - coupled with the warm comfort of the dining experiences in Dullstroom village - had guests brimming from ear to ear! First brown, first big brown, first big rainbow, first wild rainbow in a small stream, first this, first that… Biggest this and biggest didn’t go amiss either, with PB’s being broken practically every session.

If you’re looking for a memorable trophy trout experience while still enjoying some of the creature comforts, but don’t fancy traveling all day to a remote destination… Give us a call. There’s a waiting list, but good things in life are worth waiting for.

29 years in the game, from running a kick arse flyshop in Dullstroom to lovingly managing his private trout waters and fishing the world.

If you know him he ain’t one to boast, but ask him how he nearly got swept off the rocks at night keeping up with Ben Pretorius at Kosi Bay. Get him to tell you how he caught the only salmon of the week in the toughest low water season ever in Norway. Or how his first trip to the Amazon saw him embarrassingly land more double figure peacocks in one session up river than most of the group did for the whole week!

This quietly spoken and most understated person in the industry has taught more people to flyfish than most of us have had hot meals and sold more bead head woolly buggers than sardines at the Stanger Sports store.

Jungle stick

It all started with the release of the legendary Orvis Helios 3D 8wt 8'5" Blackout, a guide favourite which tamed fish around the globe. Although the Blackout became the weapon of choice, we knew its limits. With the latest iterations of these premium rods, the Helios 4D 10wt 8'5" was let loose on the waterways and was affectionately dubbed the "Whiteout". The thought of casting a 10wt all day in blistering heat and 100% humidity will turn most anglers off, but the "Whiteout" is lighter than most 8wt rods on the market. Although light in hand, the backbone required to send Macaw sized flies under trees with pinpoint accuracy and to put the handbrake on the gnarly jungle species is there in spades. The Orvis Helios 4D 10wt 8'5" is now a firm guide favourite when the likes of Peacock Bass, Jacks and Goliath Tigerfish need taming. If you are needing a proper fish beating stick, find them on our website or give one a shake in store.

Stocking trout, easy - order a truck load and throw ‘em in right !?
Our Dullstroom trout waters are managed scientifically and the results speak for themselves.
We stock lots of small fish knowing those that survive and grow out will be feral, almost wild, wily, strong and fin perfect. Before busy periods we will trickle stock, ( low numbers of quality angling size fish frequently ) these new arrivals are carefully spread out and add to the level of competition often resulting in a larger, old resident succumbing to the fly.
Follow Farmer Brown aka as he spends time on our waters and explains some of our management techniques.
Remember;
- We limit the number of anglers on our waters so booking is essential.
- Senior staff members regularly drop in to see that everyone is following our strict catch and release protocols, and of course lend a helping hand where needed.
- Our Bird of Prey Trophy dam has been closed for the whole summer and reopens on the 22nd of May. Contact us to get on the water.
