Achi, a chocolate Labrador and trained guide dog, was rescued from a sunken yacht off East London and is under the care of Dr. Pete Wood at Nahoon Animal Clinic. Despite surviving, Achi faces euthanasia due to a government mandate. To help cover his veterinary costs, Southern Cross Cruises offers a special one-hour bay cruise on Saturday, August 23, 12 noon. All funds donated to the clinic.

Humpback Whales Are Gathering in Massive Superpods — and Scientists Don’t Know Why:

Some groups contain more than 200 individuals.

Something strange is happening off the coast of South Africa: humpback whales, once thought to be largely solitary creatures, are forming massive super-pods — gatherings of 20 to 200 whales.

For a species where even 10 individuals used to be considered a "large" group, this shift has scientists scratching their heads.

These surprising congregations, first documented over the last few years, are occurring in a region where humpbacks aren't even expected to be at this time of year, flipping long-held assumptions about their migration and feeding behavior.

While researchers suspect the whales are gathering for feeding — likely drawn by unusually rich prey zones — no one’s certain why it’s happening now. Some think recovering populations may finally be large enough for this kind of social behavior to emerge. Others speculate climate change and shifting ocean ecosystems may be pushing prey closer to the coast, bringing whales with them. And then there’s the more whimsical possibility: that these ocean giants are gathering to communicate, learn, or simply to say, “So long, and thanks for all the krill.” Whatever the reason, it’s clear we’re only just beginning to understand the complexity of humpback society.
