๐ THE LEGEND OF eSIKHALENI ๐
Before it was known as Hole in the Wall, this extraordinary place was known locally as eSikhaleni โ the Place of Sound.
Passed down through Xhosa oral tradition is a haunting story of forbidden love, the sea and a mysterious people from beneath the waves.
Legend tells of a young maiden who fell in love with a man from the sea. When her father forbade their love, the Sea People came for her โ bringing a giant fish whose head they used to break through the great rock wall.
The maiden ran to her loverโฆ
and disappeared with him into the sea.
She was never seen again.
And according to the legend, when the ocean roars through eSikhaleni, the sound is said to be the voices and singing of the Sea People.
Geology tells us one story.
Xhosa oral tradition tells us another.
And perhaps that's what makes the Wild Coast so specialโฆ
some places don't just have a history.
They have a story.
