Some of the most dramatic sunsets seem to arrive with the change of seasons. From Dolphin Dream, the horizon turns into a canvas of fiery light, the sea reflecting every shade of gold and crimson. 🌊🌅
Even though this view stretches out over the ocean, the glow often spills across to the Outeniqua mountains behind us, wrapping the whole bay in light.

The seasons on the Garden Route have a magic of their own. ✨ One moment it’s layers of jerseys, socks, and shoes… the next, it’s sandals and short sleeves, wondering whether the fire should be lit inside or outside. 🔥
In South Africa, spring always seems to peek out early in August, a little taste of sunshine and blue skies, before September reminds us with a chilly surprise or two that winter isn’t quite ready to let go. 🌦️

On this day, I headed out to Voëlklip, a favourite lookout to the west, for a glimpse of the majestic Southern Right whales. The views alone are worth the trip… endless blues stretching to the horizon, lush green behind on the cliffs.

Sometimes, the best part of the adventure is simply waiting, camera balanced, heart full, soaking in the ocean’s calm until nature decides to reveal her magic. 🐋✨

After 24 years of living in the desert, where the extreme heat often kept us indoors, the Garden Route feels like a breath of fresh air - quite literally.

Here, people truly LIVE outdoors. From scenic hikes and mountain biking trails to kayaking, paragliding, and surfing in the waves, this is where adventure meets everyday life.

That’s why this lone surfer, riding powerful swells in the kind of winter weather that makes most people bunker down, felt so symbolic. While others stayed in, he was out there, embracing the freedom of the ocean, the cold wind, and the raw beauty of it all.

Even in its wildest moods, this place was love at first sight. 💙

There’s something about the colour blue that has always drawn us in. Maybe it’s the calm, or maybe it’s the wild rhythm of the waves when the ocean comes alive.

These photos were taken in Mossel Bay recently, with strong winds rolling in and the sea throwing its full energy at the coastline. Even when it’s wild, it’s spectacular.

The first time we saw Dolphin Dream, it was in weather just like this, stormy, cold, sideways rain, and winds that nearly took the car doors off. We hadn’t even seen it on a sunny day, but we somehow knew: this was the one. We boarded our flight in gusting, icy winds, but with very full hearts and a very memorable capture.

The Garden Route is full of exciting contrasts.
Right now, we’re in the middle of proper winter weather, but we’re also getting windless, 25°C blue-sky days. A true “four seasons in one day” kind of place.
And we wouldn’t have it any other way. 💙

"A few more snaps from that first visit... when we didn’t know we were standing in our future."

We walked through the rooms slowly, light pouring in through the big windows, the ocean murmuring in the background.
There was something about the layout, the air, the energy, it felt lived in, but also full of promise.
Like it had a heartbeat.

It wasn’t staged, it wasn’t polished. But we could already see us in it.

We weren’t here for this house and yet, somehow, we were always meant to be.

It’s a strange feeling when life changes without warning.
A shift you don’t expect… but recognize immediately.

And so the dream quietly began.

"The very first photo we ever took of what is now Dolphin Dream 💙🐬"

We hadn’t planned to view other houses.
We had flown down to sign for another property.

While browsing places to stay in the area, I stumbled across this house and noticed it was listed for sale.
Curious, we arranged a last-minute viewing.

They say it takes six seconds to know if a house is “the one”, for us, it took about three.

Back then, it was called Wild Season.
And in that completely unplanned moment, a new story quietly began, one that would eventually become Dolphin Dream.

We went through so many names. From Whale Tales to Dolphin Tails, each one had a little sparkle, but none felt quite ...

We went through so many names. From Whale Tales to Dolphin Tails, each one had a little sparkle, but none felt quite right. Naming a house felt surprisingly personal, like naming a child…

In the end, it was my husband who gently nudged us toward Dolphin Dream. Knowing my deep love for these beautiful, intelligent creatures (and probably hoping to wrap up the name debate), he simply said: “Why not something with dolphins?”

And that was it. It felt peaceful, fitting. The ocean has always been a part of our story, our very first conversation when we met was all about sharks, the sea, and salty adventures. 🐋🌊

Somewhere between all that, dolphins always held my heart, since I first saw them at the age of 6. In fact, my wedding ring is even shaped like one. 🐬💍

So Dolphin Dream it became. A place filled with salt air, ocean energy, and stories that continue to unfold. And frequent dolphin sightings!

Where It All Began 🌊🐬

After Columbo, the elephant seal who captured all our hearts, returned to the sea… I found myself sitting with a quiet space and a bit of a creative void. I had thought I would continue sharing more about marine life, but somehow, I felt a little adrift.

And then an old idea surfaced…
Why not start at the beginning?

This is where Dolphin Dream began, with a house once called Wild Season, rebuilt by its previous owner into the modern sanctuary it is today. When we became the new owners of this special place, we knew the name had to reflect something deeply personal… something rooted in our love for the ocean, where our friendship first began and eventually, something more...

This post marks the opening chapter. In the days ahead, I’ll share more about how our story and the sea became one. We hope you’ll join us on this journey back to the heart of Dolphin Dream 🌊💙. Welcome to our story.
