Who actually benefits when land is set aside for wildlife?

In a new piece, Harold Goodwin, WTM Africa's Responsible Tourism adviser, makes an uncomfortable but necessary point: the communities living in the buffer zones around protected areas often carry the cost of conservation without ever sharing in what tourists come to see.

It's a challenge we'll be exploring further at WTM Africa in April, as part of our ongoing panel series on the Wildlife Economy in Africa. And it's exactly why the 2027 Responsible Tourism Awards are looking for businesses and conservation organisations making a real, measurable difference to the livelihoods of the communities who live alongside wildlife, not just the wildlife itself.
