5 things South Africans keep getting wrong on their Schengen visa application 👇

1. Submitting bank statements that don't show consistent transactions. The embassy wants to see a pattern — not just a balance. Deposits made right before you apply raise red flags.

2. Writing a cover letter that reads like a holiday diary. Your cover letter is a formal document. It should address the purpose of travel, your ties to South Africa, and why you will return. Not "I'm excited to see Paris."

3. Not having travel insurance that meets the Schengen minimum. It must cover at least €30,000 and be valid for the entire Schengen area for the duration of your trip.

4. Booking non-refundable flights before your visa is approved. Book a flexible or refundable ticket — or a flight hold — until you have the visa in hand.

5. Underestimating processing time. Most Schengen embassies take 15 working days. Some take longer in peak season. Apply at least 6 weeks before travel.
