Aaron Patzer steps out of his modern, glassy, five-bedroom home and strolls across the rolling green lawns of his 22-acre oceanfront property. He pauses to taste Manuka honey from one of his beehives, then meanders down a gravel path and dives off his private boat ramp into the clear turquoise water.

“It would cost $50 million or more just for bare land like this on the ocean in Kauai,” he said. “I don’t even know how much it would cost on the coast of California.”

His house is in New Zealand and cost $2 million.

Patzer moved to the country in 2013, several years after selling Mint.com, the personal financial management website he founded, to Intuit in 2009 for $170 million.

Nearly every kind of fruit grows on the property, about an hour’s drive north of Auckland, along with a variety of nuts and vegetables. Patzer and his wife make most meals from what they grow, except for occasionally buying local fish or grass-fed meat.

After dinner they take three-mile hikes along the seaside cliffs in a nearby regional park. Their water comes from their own wells.

“I’m convinced I’ve gained five to 10 years in my life simply by moving here,” he said.
