He who says Africa, Zimbabwe in particular, has no tigers is mistaken. We may not have the big striped jungle predators, but we have our own doyen of sub aqua game, the Tiger fish. Officially recognised as a game fish by the international authority, the tiger is mostly awash in the Zambezi River and the Lake Kariba. A rare sight in most countries, and non existent In others, the Brown Hyena is a unique specie. Averaging between 110 and 125cm in head and body length, with a shoulder height of between 70 and 80cm, with a tail that 25 to 35cm long, they have a social hierarchy very much akin to that of Wolves, and are also led by the alpha male and the alpha female. Just like other species of a similar nature, they have no distinct territory and often forage alone. Albeit they are quite light, their jaws are so strong that a young animal can crack the leg bone of a Springbok within five minutes of birth. Their mating season takes place between May and August, usually done with the Alpha male of the clan, or with nomadic males. The gestation period is 97 days long and the young are kept away from the sight of the big predators for about 14 months. They have a strong sense of smell that stretches to 2km down wind, and being poor hunters, they steal from other predators, but mainly eat carcasses and supplement with rodents. fruit, eggs and insects.
