"Dear Johan and Johan,

Many thanks for checking in on my safari experience.

In a word, it was spectacular! Endless thanks to Johan van Z for refereeing me to Johan van B and for your beautifully designed Botswana experience. Victoria Falls lived up to its reputation without doubt, and now I’ve visited Victoria, Niagara, Iguaçu, and Angel Falls to name only the most impressive. That bucket list item definitely checked off!

Both safari sights were excellent. The staff could not have been warmer or more accommodating. The first sight, near the Chobe River, had the advantage of providing the only water for the animals in a very large area. The numbers were massive. Herds of over 200 elephants and 300 buffalo for example. The most thrilling experience was watching a large number of elephants swim across the river with the young ones having a hell of a good time, rolling and playing in the water. The Machaba Camp was also great. The variety of the animals was large, but the numbers were much fewer. All in all, I saw 24 kinds of mammals and 35 species of birds. Far beyond my expectations!

But I think the greatest joy was experiencing the warm hearts of the Botswana people. I already had an affection for those folks even though I hadn’t ever been there, because I’m a big fan of The Ladies No. 1 Detective Agency series. I’ve read 20 of the 25 novels written so far. I hope to be back again soon! Thanks again.
