"It is my wish that the voice of the storyteller will never die in Africa, that all children in the world may experience the wonder of books, and that they will never lose the capacity to enlarge their earthly dwelling place with the magic of stories." Puku shares this vision so articulately stated by Nelson Mandela. Puku works to build a reading culture rooted in our indigenous storytelling culture in all languages.

New Book Alert, "The Village Calls" by Sam Shakong.

Dear Puku Friends and Family,

We are honoured that two of our supporters have published memoirs and feel that both titles are ideal for any adult and for our secondary school youth.

Sam Shakong is the author of The Village Calls: Stories from Back Home a follow-up to his debut memoir, I Want to See the Sun Rise. This collection of 15 short stories, chronicles the author's return to his rural village after years in exile. From tales of youthful dreams threatened by social injustice, to deeply personal struggles for identity, dignity, and belonging, this anthology delves into the soul of a community in transition. Shakong's characters, whether wandering exiles, spirited grandmothers, or girls fighting to claim their futures, speak truths both personal and political, honouring the enduring power of storytelling in a land where change is constant and memory sacred.

The Village Calls is R280 and available for purchase online at Takealot https://www.takealot.com/rhe-village-calls/PLID101534291, as well as directly from the publisher, Xarra Books.

Sam Montši has written Defying Barriers. The Soweto-born, Lesotho-raised industrialist chronicles this extraordinary journey: from corporate leadership to the creation of Montši Investments, a thriving family business built on vision and perseverance.

The book is intentionally written with the young in mind, and he says he has two messages for them; first, the circumstances of one's birth – poverty or disadvantage -should not define one's future; and, that nothing is impossible, that one is as big as one's dreams.

Defying Barriers is available for R350 at Exclusive Books, Bargain Books and Wordsworth.
