REVIEW: WE TRIED SANDTON'S HOTTEST AFTER-DARK DINING SPOT

The revamped Greenhouse x The Shortmarket Club menu by Chef Siya Mlaba is everything you want from an after-dark dining spot - comforting, creative, and full of flavour.

We were recently treated to a line-up of favourites: shrimp popcorn pops, tempura prawn sticks, grilled peri peri prawns, chicken pasta, a salmon sushi platter, and beautifully crafted drinks (the Henry Pot and whiskey sour were standouts).

But two dishes truly stole the show…
The sesame-crusted seared tuna with Mexican chilli and ponzu came in delicate, bold and perfectly balanced. And the hot honey halloumi surprised us in the best way - it was actually the salad it was served on that became the star. Crisp greens, warm honey, and a lemon vinaigrette that brought it all together.

The mood at this Sandton haunt boasts warm lighting, vintage touches and a team that makes you feel right at home

Save this one - it’s worth the trip. Get more info in our link below

FOR MANDELA MONTH: JOIN THIS CHARITY COOK-OFF WITH A SOCIAL EDGE

This year, Nicarela Charity will be hosting their exciting Potjiekos Competition on Sunday, 27 July in Parkview. It’s a family-friendly day where community, heritage and food culture come together to support abused women and children and local school bursaries.

How does it work? Teams of 4-8 members can register to show off their cooking skills at R400 per team. Can be corporates, friends, or family groups looking to support a good cause while flexing their own take on the traditional South African favourite. A small judging panel will crown the winning team on taste, stall presentation and stall creativity. The event can only host around 40 teams, so advance registration is essential.

On open day, visitors get the chance to taste a variety of potjiekos stews and settle on their own verdict. Dishes are served with rice or pap, at R100 per plate. There will be live music and a dedicated kids’ zone with fun activities.

THIS THURSDAY: BEETHOVEN, DE BUSSY, & THE SPANISH SOUNDS OF ÉDUARD LALO

The masterful musical maestro, Conrad van Alphen, is back in Joburg once more to lead the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra for the Winter Symphony Season. Your guest violin soloist is Russian-born Andrey Baranov, who began playing the violin at five and continues to perform on prestigious stages and at major festivals worldwide.

Included in the evening‘s musical programme is Claude Debussy’s Symphony in b minor, which is a sweet and somewhat underrated discovery. The finest skill and precision are required to lead the Symphonie Espagnole, Op. 21 in d minor by Édouard Lalo, which was crafted in a period when Spanish-themed music came into vogue (Georges Bizet’s Carmen premiered a month after the Symphonie Espagnole).

And although Beethoven’s 9th and 5th Symphonies often get the most attention, his Symphony No. 6, Op. 68 in F Major, “Pastoral” holds a special spot in the annals of chamber music thanks to its confident celebration of nature.

This is the second-last concert before the winter series ends. Get your tickets via the link below!

CALUM SCOTT BRINGS HIS WORLD TOUR TO SUNBET ARENA AT TIMES SQUARE

Get your tickets now for Calum Scott’s The Avenoir World Tour coming to South Africa in January 2026. The Pretoria leg of the show runs on Saturday, 17 January. And although the singer toured SA back in 2018, this will be his first live concert in the capital, so it’s bound to be epic. “I remember my first time in South Africa, being blown away by the demand for tickets to my show – it made me feel so special,” says Calum. “Every time that I have been back, I have felt the same love and excitement.”

The Avenoir will be Calum’s third studio album, releasing in September 2025. We already got a teaser with his new single “Die For You”, which dropped last month.
“Avenoir refers to how we move through life like a rower moves: always moving forward but facing backward, seeing where we’ve been, but not where we’re going,” explains the multi-platinum-selling singer/songwriter. “The concept of Avenoir challenges all of us to live in the present, serving as a constant reminder that it is the surprises in life and the not knowing that make life terrifying, but also truly magical.”
