Tribute to Chief Olufemi Adetokunbo Majekodunmi

It is with deep sadness that the Union of African Architects (UAA) learned of the death of Chief Olufemi Adetokunbo Majekodunmi on June 5, 2026 at the age of 86.

With its disappearance, Africa loses one of its greatest builders, a visionary whose work and commitment have permanently marked the history of architecture on our continent and in the world.

First Secretary General of the Union of Architects of Africa from 1980 to 1984, Chief Majekodunmi played a decisive role in the structuring and influence of our organisation. Through his leadership, diplomacy and faith in African genius, he helped to federate the professional organisations of the continent and to bring out a strong African voice on the international scene.

His career reached a historic dimension when he became, from 1990 to 1993, the first African to preside over the International Union of Architects (UIA). Through this responsibility, he opened a new path for a whole generation of African architects and carried with conviction a vision of architecture based on excellence, cultural identity and openness to the world.

Under his presidency, the 1993 Chicago Declaration enshrined the profession's commitment to sustainable development and environmental responsibility, making him one of the precursors of contemporary reflection on sustainable architecture.

A talented architect, institution builder and man of values, Chief Majekodunmi has demonstrated throughout his life that modernity can flourish without giving up its roots. His legacy remains alive through his achievements, the institutions he helped build and the generations of architects he inspired.

On behalf of the African Architects Union, I offer our sincere condolences to his family, loved ones, the Nigerian Institute of Architects, the architectural community of Nigeria and the entire international architectural community.

Architectural Africa owes him a lot. His name will forever remain associated with the affirmation of our continent in major world bodies and the promotion of a responsible, rooted and universal architecture.

May his soul rest in peace and may the earth be light to him.
