A Tribute to Mutumwa Mawere: The Architect of Mindsets.
Today, we gather—in person and in spirit to lay to rest a man who was larger than life. To many, he was a business mogul or a controversial visionary. But to those of us who had the privilege of working alongside him at The 1873 Network, he was "Mr. M": a mentor, a provocateur, and a relentless teacher.
The Legend of "Mr. M"
Mutumwa was not interested in easy answers. He believed that the greatest poverty wasn't a lack of money, but a lack of agency and intellectual curiosity.
At The 1873, he pushed us to understand that "the power of the mind is the ultimate capital." He didn't just build companies; he built people. He challenged our assumptions, forced us to defend our logic, and taught us that leadership is a daily choice, not a title.
Working with Mr. M was a masterclass in resilience. He taught us:
Literacy is Power: Not just reading words, but reading the world—understanding systems, laws, and the mechanics of progress.
The "Me" in Community: That a strong society is built by individuals who take absolute responsibility for their own lives.
Character over Comfort: He never took the easy path, and he never let us take it either.
In His Own Words
In honor of his philosophy, we remember his frequent reminders to the team:
"The journey to a better life begins with a change in mindset. If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change."
And his unwavering belief in the future of the continent:
"Africa's problem is not a lack of resources; it is a lack of a shared understanding of what it takes to build a sustainable and inclusive future."
It is with a heavy heart that I cannot be there today to see him to his final resting place. However, the lessons he etched into our minds at The 1873 remain. Mr. M, you were a force of nature. You sparked fires in minds that will continue to burn long after today.
Rest in power, Mr. M. The legend lives on through every mind you dared to wake up.
