There is a part of Africa I’m itching to visit — Madagascar’s remote Masoala Peninsula.

The more I learn about this extraordinary corner of the world, the more intrigued I become. And after speaking to Nanette from Wild Expeditions, her enthusiasm and genuine passion for Masoala are contagious.

This is not your traditional safari destination. Here, rainforest meets the Indian Ocean, with the wild Masoala forest on one side and the waters of the Tampolo Marine Reserve on the other.

Days can be spent exploring on foot, by traditional pirogue or kayak, searching for lemurs, chameleons and some of Madagascar’s remarkable endemic wildlife. And after dark, the forest takes on a completely different character.

What really appeals to me is that Masoala feels like an adventure rather than simply a safari. Remote, wonderfully wild and very different from the destinations we know so well in southern and eastern Africa.

Masoala Forest Lodge, with Wild Expeditions, is definitely going onto my personal travel wish list.

Sometimes a conversation with someone who is genuinely passionate about a place is enough to make you want to pack your bags.

The Story Behind Nsefu Camp, South Luangwa - Zambia

Some safari camps are special because of their setting. Others are special because of the history they carry. Nsefu Camp is both.

Set on a sweeping bend of the Luangwa River in the remote Nsefu Sector of South Luangwa National Park, Nsefu has a remarkable place in Zambia’s safari history.

The story began in the early 1950s with conservation pioneer Norman Carr and Senior Chief Nsefu of the K***a people. Together, they helped establish the Nsefu Game Reserve, with the idea that wildlife could be protected while tourism could also benefit the local community.

Nsefu Camp was built in 1951 and became the first photographic safari camp in Zambia. At a time when safari was still largely associated with hunting, this was a very different approach: visitors came to experience and photograph wildlife rather than hunt it.

The original camp was later relocated to its present riverside site, where its distinctive brick-and-thatch rondavels remain today.

Robin Pope Safaris took over Nsefu in 1998, spending a year upgrading the camp before reopening it in 1999. Much of its original character has been retained, including the six rondavels overlooking the Luangwa River.

Today, Nsefu remains one of the most historic and atmospheric camps in South Luangwa — a place where the story of photographic safari, conservation and the Luangwa wilderness is still very much alive.

African Bush Baby: Small, secretive and surprisingly fascinating.

Also known as a galago, the bush baby is a nocturnal primate found mainly in sub-Saharan Africa, from West and Central Africa through East Africa and down into southern Africa, including South Africa.

Those enormous eyes help it see at night, while its large ears help it locate insects and other food in the darkness.

Bush babies are incredible jumpers, using their powerful back legs to leap between trees and branches. Depending on the species, they feed on insects, fruit, flowers and tree gum.

One of their strangest habits? They scent-mark their hands and feet with urine as they move through their territory.

They may be tiny, but bush babies are perfectly adapted to life after dark. And if you've ever heard a strange cry in the African night, you may well have heard one.

THE STORY BEHIND MOSETLHA

Follow an elephant path.

Find a giant Mosetlha tree beside a pan.

And almost 30 years later, you have one of Madikwe's most distinctive little safari camps.

That's the story of Mosetlha Bush Camp.

Founded by Chris Lucas in 1995, Mosetlha began as a place for training field guides in the newly established Madikwe Game Reserve.

Chris's wife June became an important part of the story — and their daughter Caroline, who came home from London to “help out” for six months, eventually took over running the camp.

Nearly three decades later, Mosetlha is still family owned and run. ❤

With just 10 cabins and a maximum of 16 guests, it remains small, rustic and wonderfully connected to the bush.

Even its name has meaning: Mosetlha is the Setswana name for the Weeping Wattle tree — the very tree around which the original camp was established.

For us, that's what makes a safari experience memorable.

What if your next Kruger safari meant leaving the vehicle behind?

I visited Plains Camp in July this year, and it reminded me just how different — and special — experiencing the bush on foot can be.

Set within a 12,000-hectare wilderness concession in the Kruger National Park, Plains Camp is a wonderfully intimate, old-school safari camp with just four explorer-style canvas tents overlooking the beautiful Plain.

Here, the focus isn't on driving from sighting to sighting.

It's about walking.

Following tracks. Reading the bush. Listening to alarm calls. Learning to notice the things you would simply drive past.

And then there's the Sleep-Out...

After walking out with your guides, you can spend the night on elevated wooden platforms overlooking the Xiteveteve waterhole, beneath the African stars.

A campfire. Dinner under the night sky. The sounds of the nocturnal bush. And the possibility of wildlife coming to drink below.

Now THAT is a safari experience.

Plains Camp doesn't need to be flashy. There is no Wi-Fi and very little distraction just canvas, fire, good food, wonderful guides and a huge wilderness to explore.

And perhaps that's what I loved most about it.

Having visited myself, this is definitely one I'd recommend to the adventurous safari traveller looking for something a little different from the traditional Kruger experience.
