The Golden Gate Highlands National park is truly beautiful. Spectacular scenery, great hiking, scenic drives and history from the ancient dinosaurs to modern man - you will find it all here. In the early morning or late afternoon light, the glowing rock formations giving this park it's name are truly beautiful.

The rock was laid down in layers over hundreds of millions of years, and the different formations are different colours creating a painted effect.

The Dinosaur Interpretation centre is wonderful. The displays are designed to engage the young as well as adult viewers and are very well presented. The area is famous for the breeding site discovered in a road cutting of the Massospondylus dinosaur, where nests of fossilised eggs, some with embryos visible, were found.

At the park offices the information centre has informative, engaging information on everything from the geology and fossils in the park, the vegetation and wildlife to the San rock art and the early settlers. Really worth a visit.

Some of the many rock art sites in the area are accessible after a relatively short walk - well worth the effort.

A week was far too short - somewhere deserving of another visit.

The Ann van Dyk Cheetah centre in de Wildt does the most amazing work. They breed cheetah and African Wild Dog - the second most endangered large mammal on the African continent - for release into the wild.

A tour of this facility allows up close experiences of these animals and supports the effort aimed at preventing their extinction at the same time. A wonderful experience.

Johannesburg - from a few tents on the wide open grasslands of the Highveld to the sprawling modern city of today this city is amazing. The events here in the 1880's changed the course of history for the whole of Southern Africa. Tracing that history as one travels through the city is fascinating. George Harrison Park, where it all started, is a National Heritage site currently lying in ruin. Other sites are equally neglected but one can still feel the excitement of the events that created a single South Africa.

The Cradle of Humankind is a unique place, offering a glimpse into the very beginnings of life on Earth. The geology of the area takes us back over 3 000 million years, to when the only life on our planet was single celled organisms - cyanobacteria. These conditions created a landscape that allowed the formation of caves and the undisturbed preservation of fossils, leading to the discoveries of the past century in this area. There is no other place on earth with the variety and number of hominin fossils.

The Cradle Private Nature reserve has 4 dig sites, 2 of which are of international importance. Gladysvale was the first new hominin site in South Africa since the discoveries at Sterkfontein, and Malapa produced an entirely new species - Australopithecus sediba - in 2008. The Malapa Museum is a wonderful small museum at the hotel and well worth a visit.

The Human Origins tour takes you on a journey of geology, wildlife and fossils. The landscape is spectacular and the sites visited with a specialist guide fascinating. The museum rounds out the experience.

A recent trip to the wonderful small Rietvlei Nature Reserve just outside of Pretoria. This 4000ha farm was bought by Pretoria municipality in 1929 and proclaimed a nature reserve. The dam was build during the Great Depression using manual labour and completed in 1934. The reserve offers wonderful birding as well as the game-viewing.

How much do you know about the city you live in? Why is it here? Why is it hilly when all around is flat grassland? Who would choose a barren, water scarce area for a large city?

I do tours of the city where these questions and many others are answered. I tailor to your requirements, whether illustrating curricula at school or just getting to know the area and it's history better.

Just as interesting for residents as for visitors, I try to put it all in context to give an understanding of why it is the way it is. The surrounding areas are just as interesting.
