After the extreme heat wave and severe drought Madikwe's been suffering, the rain finally came. Unexpectedly so as the El-nino effect is expected to affect normal rainfall patterns well into April 2016. We had a total of 71mm at Madikwe hills the past week, and up to 90mm in some parts of the reserve.

To put it in perspective, the whole of the previous rainy season produced only 180mm of our expected 450mm average. The dams are all up to three quarters full, the migratory birds appeared almost over night, and the animals seem energetic and lively even though the first green flush is only appearing now.

The lion sightings during the last week at Mateya Safari Lodge have been out of this world...the dry conditions we are experiencing lately have given them ample hunting opportunity around the waterholes! Guest were very lucky to even witness the Madimo male lion coalition take down a buffalo right in front of them!

This old man comes to drink at the terrapin hide at Jaci's Lodges, Madikwe Game Reserve, South Africa every day - he slowly approaches, carefully scans the surroundings, then you can see him willing his joints to bend whilst he stretches down to drink. The flick of water always changes & delights!

Guests at Mateya Safari Lodge enjoyed some personal time with a pride of lions in front of camp. The lions had killed a wildebeest that evening and later the morning they managed to take down a buffalo giving the guests a front row seat from the deck. BOOKINGS: [email protected]
