At the end of July, I had the privilege of taking a small group on safari, and the bush certainly delivered.

The cats were incredible and out in full force, giving us some unforgettable sightings.

But the real treat was the wild dogs.

Seeing African wild dogs is special enough. Seeing them with their pups was something else entirely.

Wild dogs are one of Africa’s most endangered carnivores, so every sighting feels like a privilege. Watching the pups interact with the pack, full of energy and curiosity, was easily one of my favourite moments of the trip.

You don’t often get to see a female leopard out with her cubs.

She’ll usually keep them well hidden while they’re still young, so when you get a sighting like this, you know you’re pretty lucky.

She’s got one job at the moment - keep those cubs alive. That means hunting, moving them to new hiding spots and making sure they stay out of trouble. It’s not an easy job.

Watching the cubs trying to figure out the world while she keeps a close eye on everything is something I’ll never get tired of seeing.

Early morning is when the road starts talking.

Before you see lions, leopards or cheetahs, you often find the signs first — fresh tracks in the sand, where an animal crossed, and which direction it went.

That’s why we spend as much time looking down as we do into the bush.

Predators move mostly at night and in the early hours, so tracks first thing in the morning often tell us what’s around.

It’s not just driving. It’s reading the bush properly.

This guy walked right past our vehicle, and you can see he’s taken a few knocks.

A lot of people see the scratches and think he’s been through the bushes, but they’re almost always from fighting other lions.

A male lion doesn’t have an easy life. Once he’s kicked out of the pride he was born into, it’s years of trying to survive and eventually fighting for a territory. And once he gets one, he has to keep defending it. Younger males are always looking for an opportunity to take it over.

So when you see a lion with a face like this, you’re looking at an animal that’s been through more than a few battles.

That’s the reality of life in the bush.

Tumbeta House is an intimate private safari house with three en-suite bedrooms, accommodating groups of up to six guests. The private home in Sabi Sands will be exclusively yours for your stay.

We will create a tailored package which is designed for guests looking for privacy, flexibility and a truly personal way to experience the bush. It includes a minimum three-night stay at Tumbeta, together with personally guided game drives in your own private safari vehicle.

Your drives are tailored to your interests and arranged at flexible times, giving you the freedom to spend longer at special sightings and make the most of every moment in the Sabi Sands.

The area is well known for exceptional leopard viewing, memorable Big Five sightings and the chance to see cheetah, African wild dog and, of course, a wonderful variety of other wildlife. Off-road driving, where reserve conditions allow, can provide even closer and more rewarding sightings.

One of the questions I’m asked most is, “What will we see?”

The honest answer is… every game drive is different, and that’s exactly what makes a safari so unique.

Some days we’re lucky enough to spend time with lions, leopards or elephants. Other days, it’s the smaller moments that stay with you - watching a herd of elephants interact, listening to alarm calls, following fresh tracks, or seeing a spectacular sunrise over the African bush.

A game drive isn’t just about ticking animals off a list. It’s about experiencing the bush as it unfolds naturally and understanding what you’re seeing along the way.
