Today we learnt about wet wells -

"A wet well is an underground pit or tank that collects and temporarily stores raw sewage or stormwater in a wastewater pumping system before pumps lift the liquid to a higher elevation or treatment plant."

For us South Africans that could be called a fancy "long drop"
The dangers here are however the hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and methane (CH₄) gases that could be present due to
the breakdown of organic matter and the lack of oxygen. Confined space exacerbates the risk as we are now faced with potentially both a toxic and explosive danger.

To provide a safe, robust solution, we proposed the PQD single gas detectors from Prosense, one for H2S and one for CH₄. For this application the PQD display unit would be mounted in a safe zone, away from well, with the remote sensor module head near the bottom of the well. The sensor module head would be supplied with a IP66 filter for moisture protection. As the PQD is ATEX and IECEx rated, there is no risk of spark generation. The 4 - 20mA and RS485 outputs will be used for remote monitoring.

Today we got to test drive the PMSCAN from ION Sense.

The PMSCAN is real-time particulate matter, temperature and humidity device, recording personal exposure levels of PM1, PM2.5 and PM10.

Designed for worker safety and public health assessments. The PMSCAN offers an internal memory to save up to 6145 data points and download via Bluetooth into the licence free, PC Windows Webapp, for use in South Africa.
Settable interval settings. Colour coded LED's for particulate sizing indication. Up to 15 hours of battery life.

Very affordable - for every worker.
