The Story of All Gold Tomato Sauce🦉

All Gold Tomato Sauce is one of South Africa’s most iconic and best loved food brands. Its story began in 1908, when the unique recipe was introduced by Scottish chemist John Semble. He brought the formulation to South Africa for production by H. Jones and Co., a jam manufacturing company based in Paarl in the Western Cape.

The original production process was simple but innovative. Muslin bags filled with herbs and spices were lowered into pots of ripe, freshly crushed tomatoes. This slow infusion method gave All Gold its distinct full flavoured taste, which quickly set it apart from other sauces on the market.

As the product gained popularity, All Gold expanded its range to include jams and later pasta sauces, but tomato sauce remained its flagship. The careful selection of tomato seeds and insistence on using only the finest ingredients has helped preserve the quality and consistency of the sauce over the decades.

A notable milestone in All Gold’s history occurred in 1947, when King George VI, Queen Elizabeth, and Princess Margaret visited South Africa. During their journey on the Royal Train, they were served All Gold Tomato Sauce, a proud moment for the brand that highlighted its growing national significance.

Today, All Gold remains the market leader in tomato sauces in South Africa. It continues to be made from high quality ingredients with the same commitment to flavour that began over a century ago.

The Old Harbour and Marine Hotel in Hermanus, c.1920🦉

In the early 20th century, Hermanus’s Old Harbour was the focal point of the town’s fishing industry. Established around 1855, the harbour provided a safe haven for small fishing boats. Fishermen would row out at dawn and return with their catch, which was vital to the local economy. The harbour remained central to Hermanus’s daily life until the 1940s, when a new, larger harbour was constructed to accommodate the growing fishing and tourism industries.

In 1970, the Old Harbour was declared a National Monument and later became part of the Old Harbour Museum. The museum preserves the area’s maritime history, featuring restored fishing boats and exhibits that depict the life of the early fishing community.

Overlooking the harbour is the Marine Hotel, established in 1902 by brothers-in-law Beyers and McFarlane. It quickly became one of the first hotels in Hermanus, catering to visitors drawn by the town’s fishing opportunities and sea air. After changing ownership several times, the hotel was purchased and refurbished by Liz McGrath, reopening as a five star establishment in 1998.
