In July 1900, during the Anglo-Boer War, General Christiaan de Wet carried out one of his most important strategic escapes at Slabbert's Nek. British forces were moving to trap the Free State commandos in the Brandwater Basin, hoping to destroy organized Boer resistance in the Orange Free State. Realizing the danger of becoming surrounded, De Wet refused to remain trapped.

On the night of 15 July 1900, he quietly guided more than 2,000 burghers, along with President Marthinus Theunis Steyn and more than 400 supply wagons, through the narrow pass at Slabbert's Nek before the British could fully close the escape route. The long column successfully passed through the nek and escaped into the open veld.

This daring breakout preserved the core of the Free State resistance and allowed De Wet to continue the guerrilla campaign that would frustrate British forces for the remainder of the war. His escape remains one of the most remarkable episodes of the Anglo-Boer War.
