The Galata Tower is one of Istanbul’s most iconic and historic landmarks, located in the Beyoğlu district near the Golden Horn.

What it’s about:

1. History:
• Built in 1348 by the Genoese as part of their fortifications in the Galata district, it was originally known as the Tower of Christ.
• Over time, the tower was used for various purposes, including as a watchtower during the Ottoman period, especially for spotting fires in the city.

2. Architecture:
• Standing at around 67 metres, the Galata Tower is a cylindrical stone structure topped with a conical roof.
• Its thick walls and distinctive silhouette make it a standout feature of the city skyline.

3. Observation Deck:
• Visitors can go to the observation deck at the top, which offers spectacular 360° views of Istanbul, including the Bosphorus, the Golden Horn, and the historic peninsula with sights like Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque.

4. Today:
• The tower houses a small museum showcasing its history.
