Experts just found a lost underground lake — and it's simply massive.
The lake is 454 feet (138 meters) long and 138 feet (42 meters) wide, with a total volume equivalent to 3.5 Olympic swimming pools.
Scientists have just confirmed that this is the world’s largest underground thermal lake, hidden deep inside a cave in southern Albania.
Originally found in 2021, the lake — now named "Neuron" — was recently measured using advanced 3D scanning technology. Heated by geothermal activity, this vast underground water body was found in a remote region near Leskovik, an area long restricted due to political tensions between Albania and Greece.
The discovery marks a significant milestone in underground exploration and could provide valuable insights into geological and biological processes.
The expedition, led by Czech cave explorer Marek Audy and funded by the Neuron Foundation, plans to return to study the lake’s unique ecosystem further. Scientists believe Lake Neuron could deepen our understanding of underground ecosystems and thermal water formations.
