Four Mile Headland Revisited with Ben Brown 🌱💚

Long before Maria Island earned its national park status in 1972, the land bore the heavy footprint of early agriculture, with large areas of native habitat cleared for sheep grazing and ambitious winemaking ventures. While much of the island has retained its natural wilderness, key coastal areas continue to suffer from erosion caused by land clearing more than half a century ago.

To bring the habitat back to its former state, The Maria Island Walk team has been actively working on a revegetation project at Four Mile Headland. "Back in 2014, we decided that we needed to assist in reversing the decline of habitat in this area," says Wild Bush Luxury General Manager, Ben Brown. "The main reasons were to stop erosion, but also to bring back some of the native birdlife."

When in Tasmania, you always let the locals lead the way! 🤠✨

Some lucky guests travelling with Premier Travel Tasmania recently had a very special local lead their stroll through Cradle Mountain! 10/10 service - he didn't say much, took frequent grass breaks, but he enforced a strict 0.5 mph speed limit!

Species Feature: White-bellied Sea-Eagle 🦅

The striking White-bellied Sea-Eagle (Haliaeetus leucogaster) is one of Australia's most magnificent raptors. Distributed widely across mainland coastlines, offshore islands, and major inland waterways like the Murray-Darling river system, this majestic bird of prey shares a deep, symbolic connection with coastal communities. Celebrated as a powerful guardian of the waterways, it plays a vital ecological role as an apex predator. By regulating aquatic and terrestrial prey populations and consuming carrion, these eagles help maintain the delicate balance of coastal ecosystems, serving as key indicators of overall environmental health.

Humpback Whales 🤝 The Great Barrier Reef

While the Frankland Islands are usually known for their incredible coral reefs, fish and terrestrial birds, guests were recently treated to a remarkable encounter with a visiting pair of Humpback Whales!

Mother and her calf were observed breaching just metres from the sands of Normanby Island, the major of the Frankland Island archipelago.

While infrequent, these whale encounters are certainly not unexpected. Throughout July and August, humpback whales migrate north to breed and nurture their calves before returning south to the cold waters of the antarctic.

Every day on the Frankland Islands is magical - fish, turtles, coral, sea stars, birds and more - but some days delight even more!
