Today is World Shorebirds Day.

I added a photograph of the Beach Stone Curlew I photographed on Bribie Island. This bird is threatened by frequent disturbance of its roost site.

World Shorebirds Day 2026 is celebrated on September 6, with the Global Shorebird Count taking place from September 1 to 7, 2026.

The purpose is to raise awareness of shorebird conservation, fragile wetland/coastal ecosystems, and incredible migration patterns 🥰

How to Participate: Visit a local site, count shorebirds, and submit your checklists on eBird by sharing them with the username

On the Kangaroo, Mangroves and Ocean Tour, there is more to it than only Kangaroos 🦘, although they are the highlight for many.

Our foreshore birdlife is pretty amazing too. We are already seeing some of the migrating birds coming in.

On the last tour, we did find an Osprey on the mudflats eating its catch in peace and a White Egret showing us its hunting strategy.

As it was very low tide, we could admire the shape and the plant life of the mudflats we usually dont see. I think the plants were Paddleweed, ( Halophila australis ), but I am not 100 % sure 😉

Last week I had the opportunity to try out my new camera, the Sony RX10 Ⅴ, on the foreshore. I came across a white egret hunting for fish at low tide.

🧐White egrets in Queensland (such as the Eastern Great Egret and the Little Egret) hunt primarily by using a "stand-and-wait" ambush or by slowly and deliberately stalking prey in shallow fresh or saltwater wetlands.

Key Hunting Strategies: Stand and Wait: Egrets stand completely motionless in shallow water (up to 0.3 meters deep), watching for fish, frogs, or aquatic insects to come within range.

Slow Stalking: They walk slowly and deliberately through the shallows (often 60–90% of their foraging time), keeping their bodies steady to avoid creating ripples that might warn prey.

Foot Shuffling (Little Egrets): Smaller white egrets actively disturb the mud or sand with their feet to flush out hidden small fish, crustaceans, and aquatic invertebrates.

Lightning-Fast Strike: Once prey is spotted, they use precise vision and extend their S-shaped neck with startling, spear-like speed to jab or stab the target with their sharp bill.🧐

Today on tour at Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve, we found this little cute Pademelon having a good munch of a Fig. This very young Pademelon did not seem to be disturbed by all the fans queuing up to have a good look 😂

On my admin days, it is sometimes hard to concentrate because I already see so many different species of butterflies fluttering around. 🦋 So I was wondering, is 2026 going to be a good year for butterfly spotting in the Brisbane area? 🤔

🧐Yes, 2026 is shaping up to be a solid year for butterflies in Brisbane, with regular seasonal activity and active community tracking, like Brisbane's Big Butterfly Count, highlighting steady local populations, range-shifting tropical species moving south, and stable numbers of regulars like the Common Australian Crow

Local Sightings: Regular backyard species such as the Common Grass-blue and Monarch have been active during local surveys.

New Arrivals: Climate and range shifts continue to bring northern species further down into the Brisbane region, making unusual sightings more frequent.

Migratory Visitors: While mass multi-year Caper White explosions operate on a sporadic 6-to-10-year cycle, standard spring and summer flutters remain a reliable treat across local parks and gardens. 🧐

So yes, it is going to be a good year 🦋🤗🦋

Brisbane Nature Tours has a strict policy of admiring wildlife from a safe, respectful distance. So, no disrespectful wildlife selfies for social media.

My last few tours on North Stradbroke Island have been appalling because of people's behavior on the Gorge Walk. Kangaroos are not to be touched, cuddled or sat on 🫣. I am so happy my guests understand this and behave respectfully🥰

I take all my social media wildlife photos with a 600 mm zoom lens, and guests are welcome to download them as lasting memories of a great, respectful experience.

A Day on North Stradbroke Island / Minjerribah

So much more than a beautiful Island 🌿🌊

There’s a reason the North Stradbroke Island (Minjerribah) tour is one of the most popular days out. 🩵💚💙

From the moment we board the ferry and leave the mainland behind, the day feels like an escape. There are spectacular ocean views, beautiful coastal landscapes, wildlife encounters, and plenty of opportunities to slow down and take it all in.

We spot kangaroos or koalas, explore the mangroves at Myora Springs, walk along the dramatic cliffs at Point Lookout and, in the right season, keep our eyes on the ocean for migrating humpback whales. 🐋

One of my favorite additions to the day is a visit to the Quampi Quandamooka Arts and Culture Centre.

It gives the guests the opportunity to discover more about the people, stories, culture and artistic traditions of the Quandamooka people – the Traditional Custodians of Minjerribah and the surrounding islands and waters.

For me, this makes the tour so much more meaningful. It’s not just about seeing a beautiful island; it’s about gaining a deeper appreciation for the place and the people who have cared for Country for generations.

It’s a day that brings together nature, wildlife, culture and connection – and that’s what makes North Stradbroke Island / Minjerribah so special. 🌿💚

We had a gorgeous day at the Bellthorpe Stays. A lovely local booked this tour for her hubby's birthday 🥰.

We managed to do quite a hike again, as the weather is so much cooler, and we walked up the range with gorgeous views over the rainforest, bush and pastureland.

They truly enjoyed the day, as you can read in the review 😊

It was great to be able to get to places not normally accessible to the general public and to see and learn about the local flora and fauna. We really enjoyed that it was a private tour. It was well-paced, and the tour guide was outstanding.

And back at Maiala again today, and yes, we got soaked 😂. It was pouring down when we were in the middle of the rainfore...

And back at Maiala again today, and yes, we got soaked 😂. It was pouring down when we were in the middle of the rainforest, but we still had a great time.

A few Pademelons and a few birds continued their songs.

The rainforest floor is covered with the Red Apple Tree fruit and lots of tiny flowers of the White Booyong (this is a big buttress tree)

We truly enjoyed our cuppa after the walk and finished off with a nice drive through a very foggy, mystical rainforest 🌴
