K’gari, formerly known as Fraser Island, is a World Heritage-listed sand island located off Queensland’s south-eastern coast in the Wide Bay–Burnett region. About 250 km north of Brisbane, it falls within the Fraser Coast Regional Council area.
The World Heritage listing covers not only the island itself but also its surrounding waters and parts of the adjacent mainland, which together form the Great Sandy National Park. According to the 2021 census, K’gari has a population of 152, while up to 500,000 visitors travel there each year.
The island is part of the traditional lands of the Butchulla people, who have long known it as "K’gari." European settlers renamed it Fraser Island in 1847, after Captain James Fraser of the Stirling Castle, who was shipwrecked and died there in August 1836.
On 7 June 2023, the Queensland Government officially restored the island’s traditional name, K’gari.
