Justin and Pauline MacDonnell purchased the 72,000-acre (around 30,000 hectares) property between 2014 and 2016, creating what is now Wallaroo Outback Retreat , a character-filled lodge built from timber milled right on the property.
Still very much a working cattle station, it runs around 1,800 head of grass-fed cattle and sits near Injune, about 160km north of Roma, within the rugged and diverse Carnarvon Ranges.
Tucked behind the Retreat are ten beautifully appointed glamping tents, five Deluxe with private ensuites, and five Classic tents with their own bathroom just a short stroll away. Wake up beneath towering eucalypts, listening to the sounds of the bush, with crisp white linen and real posturepedic beds, truly camping at its best.
Evenings are something special, with time to enjoy a yarn, a glass of wine, and camp oven cooking around the fire pit, all while keeping an eye out for rock wallabies along the cliffs.
The property is also rich in history, home to significant Aboriginal cultural sites including the Axe Factory, an important stone tool-making area, and Rainbow Cave, known for its striking stencil art.
It’s equally impressive for its natural beauty, with places like Cycad Gorge showcasing ancient Macrozamia moorei cycads, some hundreds of years old.
