180km sounds tough...

Until you’re sitting at the back of a bunch like this. 😎

Good wheels. Good company. Great roads.

From racing the Tour de France to helping our guests ride its most famous climbs. 🇫🇷🚴

Meet Patrick Jonker, the first feature in our new Behind the Ride series.

Pat spent 12 years as a professional cyclist, raced all three Grand Tours, finished 12th overall at the Tour de France and won the Tour Down Under.

These days, you’ll find him on the other side of professional cycling, guiding Bikestyle guests through the mountains, sharing stories from inside the peloton and helping riders find their own way to the top.

And his approach to riding has changed a little too.

“I stop and take pictures and don’t time myself up the climbs anymore.”

There’s a lot more to Pat than the results on his cycling CV.

Japan rewards riders who notice the little things, not just the climbs.

The way the roads flow.
The quiet moments between towns.
The stops that become part of the ride, not a break from it.

It is one of those destinations that feels different from the first day.

If Japan is on your list, start with what riders should actually expect from the experience, not just the route profile.

Your first 20 minutes shouldn't be your fastest 20 minutes.

It sounds obvious, but put a group of cyclists together on fresh legs and somehow the first climb becomes a WorldTour selection race. 😂

Start easier than you think you need to.

Let the legs warm up, settle into the bike and give everyone a chance to find their rhythm.

There'll be plenty of time to make each other suffer later.

Save this for your next group ride.

Some rides are about the view, not the numbers. 🏔️

Snow-capped mountains, a lake beside you and good company on the road.

Forget the numbers. Just enjoy the ride. 🚴‍♂️🏔️

Some places are just better explored by bike.

Great roads, incredible scenery and good people to share it with.

Where would you ride next?

I've ridden a lot of famous climbs, but the Stelvio is still the one I keep wanting to ride again.

It's not just the 2,757 metres, the Giro history or the endless switchbacks.

It's the setting.

That's the part that stays with you.

Would you ride the Stelvio?
