The Breaksea Islands Tender Excursion is always a highlight for our guests - and especially for skipper Piet, who loves navigating his tinny through the rolling swell. On a wild and wooly day like this, the islands and their rocky crevices, sprayed with sea water, are truly something to behold.

Guide Peter Marmion loves telling a yarn or three at the site of Win and Clyde Clayton’s home in Bathurst Harbour. A cosy refuge from the elements, this sheltered shack and its precious treasures are gateway into a time gone by.

Swapping naturescapes for cityscapes, and the wild Southwest for the (relatively) bustling metropolis of Hobart. Between now and December 1st (when our Southwest Season starts again), find expedition vessel Odalisque III docked on Hobart’s waterfront, cruising on the Derwent River for private day charters, or perhaps between Maria Island and Freycinet on East Coast Expeditions 👋🏼 It’s nice to be home!

On Board's skipper Pieter was interviewed by Tourism Tasmania for Discover Tasmania's Travelling Mindfully Series. The series tells the stories behind the tourism innovators helping make a positive difference to our unique island. Having a meaningful positive impact on the precious wilderness areas that On Board has the privilege to showcase is fundamental to our operation.

Sustainability is at the core of the On Board experience. The crew (a chef, a guide, a skipper and two hosts) harvest rainwater from the vessel’s roof to use during the expedition. Excess energy is pumped into batteries to store for more rainwater collection. On Board’s expert guides are made familiar with biosecurity to protect the fragile environment and guests can contribute to citizen science projects during the voyage.

“We are in a very remote, precious landscape; one of the most precious and remote landscapes on the planet,” Pieter says. “And it's a whole UNESCO heritage area; one of the largest in the world.

“We take delight in sharing the hidden world with our guests.”

We encourage you to watch and read the series, to learn more about travelling mindfully in Tasmania. The link to the Tasmania's Waterways episode has been posted in the comments below.

What lies beneath? In the tannin-stained waters of Port Davey, sea pens and feather-like sea whips drift in filtered light — delicate, ancient, and rarely seen. Watch this short video (link posted below) courtesy of Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service, to glimpse the rare underwater world behind our creative heart.

These quiet wonders haven’t just inspired awe; they’ve shaped the feel of Odalisque III. From the organic lines on her hull to the carved huon pine framing your morning cuppa, the influence of the underwater world is subtle, storied, and unmistakably Tasmanian. It’s design the On Board way: shaped by place, guided by nature, and committed to preserving the wild.

Blue skies & sunshine guiding us past the rugged Ironbound Range & Precipitous Bluff - two icons of Discover Tasmania's wild southwest - as Odalisque III makes her way back to the big smoke.

Affectionately known as "PB" among bushwalkers, Precipitous Bluff towers dramatically above the southern coastline. A formidable sight on foot, and majestic when admired from the comfort of the vessel👌🏼
