Water is precious.

On Board is fully self-sufficient in water while exploring the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. Our watermaker transforms seawater into fresh water, while rainwater from the pristine southwest skies is collected for drinking—some of the cleanest in the world, we think.

From sweeping buttongrass moorlands to tiny wildflowers, pandani, and ancient pines, the flora of Tasmania’s Southwest is quietly extraordinary. Shaped by wild weather and ancient, nutrient-poor soils, these plants are hardy, beautifully adapted, and, in some cases, found nowhere else on Earth. A landscape that rewards slowing down and looking. 📸

The Breaksea Islands, shaped by the Southern Ocean and the wild weather of Tasmania’s Southwest.

There are no roads here, and very few people ever experience these shores up close. We explore slowly, from the water — following the conditions, noticing the details and letting the landscape set the pace.

Remote, remarkable and entirely unforgettable.

Apply Now: Head Chef, On Board

We're looking for a Head Chef for On Board's Southwest Tasmania season. With the Tasmanian World Heritage Wilderness Area as your 'office', we're seeking a down-to-earth and adaptable chef with a keen eye for detail and a passion for Tasmanian produce.

You'll be behind the preparation and service of every meal aboard expedition vessel Odalisque III: fresh Tasmanian fare, simple flavours, the same relaxed-but-considered style we bring to everything else. You'll also be the one telling guests the story behind it all — where it came from, who caught it, why it's on the plate.

This is our main chef role for the Port Davey expedition season, December to May — up to 18 trips (2, 5 and 7 days) through Bathurst Harbour and the Southwest wilderness. You must be available to do the majority of these trips. (If you're interested in doing just a couple of trips, then a Guest Chef role might be more your style - reach out and let us know.)

Keen? Register your interest by 23 August at
https://onboardexpeditions.com.au/work-with-us/

Have questions? Drop us a line at [email protected]

PS. Did we mention the commute to work is by seaplane?

Ten years of On Board, and this year's anniversary competition winner takes us back further than any of us expected — to 1976.

Back in the 1970s, Douglas piloted one of the first twin-engine aircraft into Melaleuca, carrying a federal minister and his entourage — and spent a night or two on the ground with Deny King himself.

Fifty years on, Douglas told us he'd love to relive that wild southwest with his wife. So that's exactly what we're going to help him do.

Congratulations, Douglas — we'll see you in Port Davey.
