#🌞 Abu Simbel: The Temple That Refused to Disappear
Some monuments impress you because of their size.
Abu Simbel impresses because it shouldn't even be where it stands today.
Carved directly into the mountainside over 3,200 years ago by Pharaoh Ramses II, the twin temples of Abu Simbel were built to showcase the power of Egypt and to honour both Ramses and his beloved Queen Nefertari.
But in the 1960s, the construction of the Aswan High Dam threatened to submerge the temples forever beneath the rising waters of Lake Nasser.
What followed remains one of the greatest archaeological rescue missions in history.
The entire complex was carefully cut into thousands of blocks, moved piece by piece, and reconstructed on higher ground approximately 65 metres above its original location and 200 metres back from the Nile's edge.
And the magic didn't stop there.
Twice every year, the rising sun travels through the temple's entrance and illuminates the inner sanctuary, lighting the statues of Ramses II and the gods seated within. This remarkable solar phenomenon occurs around 22 February and 22 October, attracting visitors from around the world who gather to witness one of Egypt's most extraordinary spectacles.

This exciting transformation has already commenced, with carefully planned renovations taking place while the historic Palace Wing continues welcoming guests. The full transition is expected to be completed in late 2027, when the hotel will officially join the Mandarin Oriental collection. Few discoveries in history have captured the imagination quite like the tomb of Tutankhamun.
In November 1922, British archaeologist Howard Carter uncovered the nearly intact tomb of the young Pharaoh in the Valley of the Kings near Luxor. Hidden for over 3,000 years, it revealed more than 5,000 treasures, including the world-famous golden mask that has become an enduring symbol of Ancient Egypt.
Today, visitors to Egypt can admire many of these remarkable treasures and gain a fascinating insight into the life of a king who ruled for only a short time, yet became the most famous Pharaoh of all.
