In the heart of Sarajevo’s Baščaršija lies Kazandžiluk, the famous Coppersmith Street, where the sound of hammers shaping copper has echoed for centuries.

This traditional craft has been passed down through generations, transforming simple pieces of copper into beautiful coffee pots, trays and unique works of art. In this video, we meet Sakib Baščaušević, one of the artisans preserving this important part of Sarajevo’s cultural heritage.

Every handmade detail tells a story of patience, skill and tradition. Kazandžiluk is more than a street filled with workshops, it is a living reminder of Sarajevo’s history and the people who continue to keep its old crafts alive.

🚻 Would you believe that one of Europe’s oldest public toilets still in use can be found in the heart of Sarajevo?

Built around 1530 as part of Gazi Husrev-beg’s Waqf, this public facility was connected to a wider system of waterlines, fountains and public buildings created to serve Sarajevo’s citizens and visitors.

At a time when many European cities still lacked organised public sanitation, Sarajevo was developing infrastructure based on cleanliness, accessibility and care for the community.

Almost 500 years later, the public toilet is still functioning in Baščaršija, continuing the purpose for which it was originally built.

Just another surprising piece of Sarajevo’s history hiding in plain sight.

There are three traditional places every visitor should try:

🥩 Ćevabdžinica for freshly grilled ćevapi, served in warm somun with onions and kajmak.

🥧 Buregdžinica for burek filled with meat, as well as sirnica, zeljanica and krompiruša, usually served with cold yogurt.

🍲 Aščinica for traditional homemade dishes such as sogan-dolma, stuffed peppers, klepe, Bosanski lonac and other meals prepared slowly, just like in a Bosnian home.

These are not only places to eat. They are an important part of Sarajevo’s culture, history and everyday life.
