MOREMI GAME RESERVE: Where Heritage Meets the Wild
Did you know that Chief’s Island, at the heart of Moremi Game Reserve, was once the royal hunting ground of the BaTawana chiefs?
Known in some local traditions as Xaxaba, Chief’s Island holds a remarkable place in Botswana’s history. For generations, it symbolised the authority of the BaTawana dikgosi and their deep connection to the Okavango Delta.
In 1963, a historic conservation decision led by Regent Elizabeth Pulane Moremi saw the BaTawana set aside their ancestral land to establish Moremi Game Reserve, named in honour of Chief Moremi III. What was once a royal hunting ground became a sanctuary for wildlife.
🐘 Today, Chief’s Island is renowned for its incredible wildlife, including elephants, lions, leopards, buffalo and African wild dogs. Yet beyond the extraordinary sightings lies a deeper story of cultural heritage, traditional leadership and community-led conservation.
