The Power of Partnerships. Presented at the Music and Health Research Institute Conference in Ottawa with Dr. Stephanie Plamondon and Jennifer Buchanan, Music Therapist. Pam Tremblay Lansbergen made the drive from our Business Ops HQ in Southern Ontario to be part of it.

This presentation was years in the making—with one goal:
🎵 To bring music therapy to more people who might never have had access otherwise. Every conversation, every partnership, every mile driven—worth it.

We are deeply grateful to the Calgary Poppy Fund for their generous support, which will provide a full year of music therapy at Carewest Colonel Belcher—a residence for veterans in Calgary.

For decades, music has been used as a meaningful part of recovery and rehabilitation for those who served. In fact, music therapy has been a part of veteran care since 1945, offering a non-verbal, deeply personal path toward healing. Whether through playing an instrument, writing a song, or using music to reminisce, music therapists aim to restore connection, foster expression, and support emotional and physical well-being.

Today, Certified Music Therapists (MTAs) around the world work in many healthcare settings supporting veterans and first responders - young and old - as a vital part of care for individuals facing PTSD, brain injury, Parkinson’s, or chronic pain—and for those navigating grief, identity, and isolation after service.

Thank you, Calgary Poppy Fund, for helping us serve those who served.

🎉 2025 Patient Experience Award Recipient 🎶

Our entire music therapy team—including the amazing allied health professionals, physicians, nurses, researchers, managers, patient family advisors, data analysts, students, and PFCC (Patient and Family Centred Care) staff we collaborate with—has been awarded the 2025 Patient Experience Award from the Health Quality Council of Alberta for our work in Calgary’s acute care settings!

We are incredibly proud to share this honour with the National Music Centre's Music Therapy Initiative, supported by the Calgary Health Foundation, and we extend our heartfelt thanks to Dr. Stephanie Plamondon for thoughtfully spearheading the application for this award.

This recognition reflects years of collaboration, compassion, and innovation—and it highlights the growing role of music therapy in healthcare environments where it’s needed most.

Palliative, neurological, and critical care hospital patients often experience high rates of anxiety, distress, confusion, pain, and poor sleep. Standard treatments can sometimes be limited by side effects, and patient distress in ICUs is commonly managed with sedation, especially during prolonged stays.

Music therapy provides an evidence-based, non-drug option for reducing pain, anxiety, and emotional distress. Certified Music Therapists (MTAs) use music intentionally to support health and well-being, offering a safe outlet for patients and families to process anxiety, fear, grief, or frustration.

Individual and group music therapy sessions are currently offered at acute care sites across Calgary, with non-verbal formats available to support patients who find traditional talk therapies less accessible—bridging language barriers, and reaching those on mechanical breathing support, who may be confused or not fully aware.

Together, our mission is to create more moments of comfort, connection, and care.

Finding the right health-care provider can be challenging. Whether you’re looking for a doctor, nurse, specialist, social worker, music therapist, or another health professional, there are many important factors to consider:

❓Are they properly qualified for the role they are performing?
❓Do they have experience relevant to your specific needs?
❓Do you feel a sense of trust or rapport with them?

An excellent place to start is by confirming the professional you are considering working with is appropriately credentialed.

Last month, our Business Operations Manager, (Certified MTA Pam Lansbergen), attended the Rhythm2Recovery Canada training at Perfect Harmony Music Studio Ltd facilitated by Leah Hofer. ❤️🎶🥁

Here's what Pam had to say about the training:
"Not only was it fantastic to learn so many applicable and versatile drumming activities, it was also a wonderful chance to connect with like-minded individuals and organizations.

The discussion in the group was incredibly rich with a mix of music therapists, music educators, drum circle facilitators, child and youth workers, social workers, and first responders from all corners of the province (and beyond). As an additional bonus: 2 PTSD service dogs (Halo and Maverick❤️🐶 ) also hung out with us!"

Next training in Calgary May3-4. Follow R2R for more information.
