Some epic captures from a few days ago during a T-party east of Sooke. We counted around 14 individuals which included T60D, T60E, the T69s, T46B1s and T109Bs. When killer whales come together in large social gatherings like this one we tend to see lots of activity like spyhops or breaching!

Captain Ryan was a whale spotting machine on yesterday's tour.

Within 15 minutes of leaving the harbour, he spotted black fins on the horizon! The T19s were westbound toward the Sheringham Lighthouse. Local legend T11A (Rainy) was also spotted with the group for a short while before he disappeared and eventually reappeared in Sooke harbour. After departing the killer whales we ventured east and spotted 5 humpback whales, 3 of which showed a little curiosity and approached our vessel for a quick bit before diving down and continuing on their journey.

Fantastic weather certainly helps us spot fantastic whales!

So we found a few whales today...

Ok maybe we found a LOT of whales today. As far as the eye can see, we estimate at least 40-50 humpbacks scattered across the area with many more likely further west.

We lucked out and had a massive group of ~12 individuals traveling and socializing together. The most we had seen together as a unit prior to this tour was 4-5 whales. At one point we must have had around 25 humpbacks within 400m of us.

Engines off, whales everywhere, does it get any better than this???

A fun-filled morning tour!

T35As out in full force, pushing against the strong tides at Race Rocks.
A mom+calf pair of humpback whales.
Steller and California sea lions disputing over rock real estate.
Bald eagles scanning for their next prey.

Mass gatherings of humpbacks have also been spotted west of Sooke in recent days. They'll be around for a while!

It has been a crazy busy week but we're all caught up on photos so here is one of the highlights!

Designated as the OCT064s in the 2021 NOAA catalogue, or as the T135s/CA027s, this trio of killer whales are better known off the outer coast of California and have possibly never been sighted here in the Salish Sea. They spent less than 24 hours in the area but our crew was able to see them just outside of Sooke on a late afternoon charter before they sped off into the sunset as the wind and waves picked up.

Just another reason why we love doing what we do... you never know when a rare encounter might happen!
