Full day in Caño Negro? You better spend a night, it totally worth it. Why?
It should first be noted that this tour does bring travelers inside of the Original Caño Negro Refuge. That said, isn’t true that the area just outside the park is just as spectacular as the area inside. It is nice, but you can miss a lot. Only the Original National Wildlife Refuge is part of the RAMSAR convention. Why? because Caño Negro Refuge is the only natural lagoon system on the north side of Costa Rica.

The truth is that to visit Caño Negro, is not necessary to join a day tour. You can easily drive your car to Caño Negro town along road 138. Caño Negro Refuge and its little village are located mid-way between Los Chiles and Upala. The road is bumped? yes, it is. Caño Negro seems to be in a remote area? well yes. And is the reason why Caño Negro Refuge is so full of nature. This is the reason why Caño Negro is a prime hotspot for birdwatchers and nature lovers.

These are some birds that are more difficult to spot in Caño Negro, and easier in Medio Queso.
