Our architecture tour of New Belgrade, the capital of Socialist Yugoslavia, tells a story of a unique society that existed from 1945 to 1991.

The five iconic modernist and brutalist buildings represent original ideas and bold ambitions that shaped Yugoslav society.





💎 The Palace of Federation was the seat of Yugoslav government. Its monumental modernist architecture represented the strength and unity of Yugoslav Federation.

From here, Yugoslavia was running its politics of 'Third Way', non adhering to either capitalist democracy of the West or totalitarian Soviet-style communism.

The palace was completed in 1960, ready to host the 1st Conference of the Non-Aligned Movement. The leadership of the movement of 120 countries gave Yugoslavia a global voice that advocated for peace and equality and provided business opportunities for Yugoslav companies.

💎 The Museum of Contemporary Art was called "the most beautiful building in the whole communist world" by Washington Post's art and architecture critic Wolf Von Eckardt.

Its crystal-like forms and marble facades show Belgrade's intention to develop qualities of a European metropolis - modern, open and cosmopolitan.

💎 115m tall, the first smart building in the Balkans, Genex Tower belonged to a Yugoslav socialist business success story.

Genex Company was a state-owned multinational, trading with both East and West, with billions of dollars turnovers and 6,000 employees. They brought Coca Cola and McDonald's to Yugoslavia and exported Yugo car to US.

💎 The socialist residential blocks were designed around the ideas of quality of life and community.

Besides apartment buildings, the blocks included structures and spaces for schooling and childcare, leisure activities and socialising, arts and culture.

💎 Sava Center was completed at record speed to host the second OSCE conference and short-listed for Prtzker prize, demostrating Yugoslavia's ability to produce anything at par with the developed Western world.

When it was built, as a place to host and impress the world, noone could have imagined the end of Yugoslavia would begin right here, at the last congress of Yugoslav Communist party in 1990.

Last Saturday, we took this amazing team to a slightly different team building.

It started with the immersion in artistry and tranquillity of 3,500 sq meters of mosaics from Murano glass.

An experience of awe and inspiration, that sparked some new conversations along the hike and wine tasting that followed.
