"Hiking mistakes I didn't even know I was making..."

I thought hiking was a physical challenge.

Turns out, most of my mistakes had nothing to do with strength.

The biggest mistake? Treating the mountain like something to conquer.

I rushed viewpoints because I was thinking about the next one.
I checked my watch more than the landscape.
I worried about how far was left instead of appreciating where I already was.

I carried expensive gear but forgot to carry enough curiosity.
I spent time looking for the perfect photo while missing moments that would have been perfect memories.

Sometimes I'd be so focused on reaching the destination that I'd walk past a porter carrying three times my weight, a local with stories I'd never hear, or a sunrise that lasted only a few minutes.

Another mistake was assuming discomfort meant something was wrong.

Cold mornings.
Tired legs.
Rain.
Long climbs.
No signal.

I wanted the adventure, but I didn't always want the parts that make an adventure memorable.

The truth is, the things I complained about on the trail often became the stories I told the most afterward.

The mountain didn't change.

The way I experienced it did.
