The Long-wattled Umbrellabird is unfortunately classified as a vulnerable and declining species, endemic to the Tumbes-Chocó-Magdalena biodiversity hotspot. It occurs in the humid foothill rainforests of the Pacific slopes of the Andes in Ecuador and Colombia. This bird is not merely a marvel of nature; it is one of its most enigmatic masterpieces. With its striking, long wattles that hang from its throat and a magnificent, umbrella-like crest atop its head, the Long-wattled Umbrellabird is an extraordinary spectacle of the wild.

Exciting news! After an extended period without sightings and reports at San Isidro Lodge, one of the animals I admire most has made a remarkable return to the salt lick. Yesterday, on our ongoing tour we were fortunate enough to witness the rare and elusive Andean tapir, also known as the Woolly Tapir , along with its young calf! This sighting fills us with immense joy and hope, as the Andean tapir is not only incredibly rare but also critically endangered (it’s estimated than fewer than 2500 individuals remain in the wild)
We invite you to join us on our tours for a chance to experience extraordinary wildlife firsthand and create unforgettable memories!

The Chocó Andino in Ecuador is a true birdwatching paradise, and Amagusa Reserve never fails to surprise. Every visit reveals something new—whether it’s a rare sighting or the chance to capture a great photo. For bird lovers and photographers alike, this place is pure magic.
Among the birds to look for are the Orange-breasted Fruiteater, White-tipped Sicklebill, and Rose-faced Parrot—featured in the photos I’m sharing in this post.
Amagusa Reserve continues to amaze with its rich variety of birdlife and incredible photo ops. Whether you’re a seasoned photographer or just starting out, this is the place where every click of the camera feels like a success.
If you haven’t experienced the beauty of this bioregion yet, we invite you to join us on one of our trips for a memorable birding/ photography experience or simply to immerse yourself in the natural beauty of this bioregion.

Field report from our guide.
Kicking off the year with a shot of one of my favorite creatures on earth—owls.
I’ve always had a special fascination with them. While many people wrongly associate owls with bad luck or ominous meanings, I see them as symbols of wisdom, intuition, and quiet strength.
I feel incredibly lucky to witness these beautiful creatures in their natural habitat.
Here’s to a year full of awe and wisdom, just like the owls!
Join us for a memorable nature experience.

Observing birds in their natural habitat is a truly rewarding experience. It’s even more remarkable when they allow you a moment to capture their beauty. In this case, I had the privilege of observing a Scaled Fruiteater. Moments like these highlight the importance of preserving these ecosystems and the wildlife they support.
A special thanks to the Paz family Refugio Paz de las Aves for their dedicated work in preserving this beautiful reserve for so many years. Their commitment to conservation ensures that future generations can experience the same wonders.

It’s truly exiting to witness how Ecuador continues to unveil unique conservation areas that allow us to encounter incredible species up close—like this stunning Gray and Gold Tanager.
One of the most rewarding parts is that these new reserves also protect one of the most biodiverse forests in the world—the Chocó Andino. Sachaguatusa, where I took this shot, is a perfect example of how conservation efforts are giving us the chance to admire these unique creatures while safeguarding their habitat.
Thanks to everyone involved in protecting Ecuador’s natural heritage.

During our recent trip, we visited the unique Tapichalaca Reserve, and one of the unforgettable highlights was observing the endangered Jocotoco Antpitta (Grallaria ridgelyi). This elusive and captivating bird is found only in a small area of the Andes in extreme southeastern Ecuador and northeastern Peru, and it is a true gem for birdwatchers. Known for its shy nature and striking appearance, the excitement of seeing it up close made the experience all the more rewarding.

At Tapichalaca, we were lucky enough to observe this incredible species, thanks to the efforts of the dedicated local team of the Fundación de Conservación Jocotoco. The reserve is the best place to observe this species in its natural habitat.

It’s moments like these that remind us why Ecuador is such a paradise for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts alike. A huge thanks to Lloyd Davis for sharing his enthusiasm and appreciation for this incredible bird – it was truly a highlight of our journey!

15/10/2024

Owl watching during our trips is a magical experience that connects us to the natural world. Capturing these magnificent creatures through photography is a rewarding challenge, but it’s essential to do so respectfully and responsibly.
1. Respect Their Space
When observing owls, it’s vital to keep a safe distance. Use a telephoto lens to get close-up shots without intruding on their habitat.
2. Avoid direct light on their eyes
Owls have sensitive eyes, and direct illumination can cause them distress. When taking photos, avoid shining lights directly into their eyes. Instead, use natural light to your advantage, shooting during the golden hours of dawn or dusk when the soft light creates beautiful images without the harshness of direct flash. Shining a light directly at an owl’s face can be particularly harmful. This can cause temporary blindness or disorientation, making it difficult for them to navigate their environment. Instead, aim your light at the surroundings or use diffused lighting techniques to minimize direct exposure to their eyes.
If you need to use light to illuminate an owl for a short period, keep it brief. Prolonged exposure to artificial light can be stressful for owls and disrupt their natural behaviors.
3. Say No to Flash
Using a flash can harm an owl’s vision, disorienting them and potentially leading to stress or injury. Opt for settings that allow for higher ISO levels or longer exposure times instead of flash.
Photographing owls is not just about getting the perfect shot; it’s about cherishing the opportunity to witness these incredible birds in the wild. By taking the time to observe them respectfully and avoiding harmful practices, we can enjoy their beauty while contributing to their preservation. Happy owl watching! 🦉

Portrait of the Hyacinth Macaw the largest parrot in the world.
Unfortunately, these beautiful birds are still considered vulnerable and face threats from habitat loss and the illegal pet trade, making conservation efforts crucial for their survival. Observing a Hyacinth Macaw in its natural habitat is not just a visual delight; it’s a reminder of the importance of protecting our planet’s biodiversity.
