One of the true highlights of our recent expedition to northern Peru was the Rufous-crested Coquette, without question one of the most striking hummingbirds in the region. This small but highly charismatic species is known for its bold rufous crest, contrasting plumage, and rapid, agile flight, features that make both observation and photography especially rewarding.
The Rufous-crested Coquette inhabits forest edges, secondary growth, and flowering clearings, where it often appears briefly and unpredictably. Because of its localized distribution and specific habitat preferences, it is one of the key target species we actively search for on this route.
Our northern Peru itineraries are built to maximize opportunities to observe and photograph specialty and endemic species, while working with natural light, clean backgrounds, and ethical wildlife practices.
If this species is on your wishlist, or if you’re interested in joining a future expedition focused on hummingbirds and Peruvian endemics, feel free to leave a comment or send us a message. We’re always happy to share details about upcoming departures and custom trips.
