One of the true highlights of our recent expedition to northern Peru was the Rufous-crested Coquette, without question one of the most striking hummingbirds in the region. This small but highly charismatic species is known for its bold rufous crest, contrasting plumage, and rapid, agile flight, features that make both observation and photography especially rewarding.

The Rufous-crested Coquette inhabits forest edges, secondary growth, and flowering clearings, where it often appears briefly and unpredictably. Because of its localized distribution and specific habitat preferences, it is one of the key target species we actively search for on this route.

Our northern Peru itineraries are built to maximize opportunities to observe and photograph specialty and endemic species, while working with natural light, clean backgrounds, and ethical wildlife practices.

If this species is on your wishlist, or if you’re interested in joining a future expedition focused on hummingbirds and Peruvian endemics, feel free to leave a comment or send us a message. We’re always happy to share details about upcoming departures and custom trips.

In that instant, you don’t know what to feel first, awe, disbelief, or something deeper and impossible to describe.

This is more than a sighting. It’s one of those experiences that stay with you long after you leave the forest. Moments. This is the kind of experience you can live on our tours in northern Peru, home to some of the most iconic and endemic species of this incredible country.

There are places where the landscape is not just a backdrop, it’s part of the story.
In Torres del Paine National Park, every sunrise and sunset feels cinematic: jagged peaks glowing with first light, endless steppes painted in gold, and silence broken only by the wind… and the possibility of an encounter.
These are some of the landscapes we experience during our Puma Tracking Expedition, as we spend long hours in the field searching for one of Patagonia’s most iconic and elusive predators. Between dawn and dusk, patience is rewarded, not only with wildlife moments, but with unforgettable scenery that stays with you long after the trip ends.

On our most recent tour in Northern Colombia, field sessions in La Guajira provided excellent opportunities to observe and photograph striking species such as Vermilion Cardinal, White-whiskered Spinetail, and Russet-throated Puffbird. These arid landscapes consistently offer productive conditions for both birding and photography.

These experiences are part of a carefully designed Northern Colombia itinerary that links three highly contrasting regions: the endemic-rich Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, the lowland and foothill forests of Parque Nacional Natural Tayrona, and the arid–coastal ecosystems of La Guajira along the Caribbean coast.

By combining these areas, the itinerary maximizes habitat coverage and species turnover, while allowing focused time for regional endemics and key targets, supported by efficient logistics and well-timed field sessions.

Jaguar & Nutria Gigante | Pantanal, Brasil

Jaguar & Giant Otter | Pantanal, Brazil
Photographed at Encontro das Águas, one of the wild heartbeats of the Pantanal.

The Jaguar (Panthera onca) is the ultimate icon of the Pantanal and one of the most powerful wildlife encounters on our journeys. Watching a jaguar move silently along riverbanks or emerge from dense vegetation defines why this region is considered one of the best places on Earth to observe this apex predator in the wild.

Sharing these same waterways, the Giant Otter (Pteronura brasiliensis) brings constant movement, sound, and energy—an unmistakable sign of healthy rivers and thriving wetlands. Encountering both species in their natural environment is an experience that stays with you forever.

During our recent trip to Patagonia, right at the end of spring, we had the pleasure of observing this stunning member of the flycatcher family: the Spectacled Tyrant (Hymenops perspicillatus).
A fairly common species, frequently seen in marshes and open pastures, this small bird truly never goes unnoticed.
Its striking facial pattern and vibrant contrasts make it impossible to overlook. Even though it is often seen during this season, it never fails to captivate photographers and birders alike.

What an unforgettable journey in Colombia! 🇨🇴
We’re wrapping up this incredible photo expedition through one of the most stunning regions of the Andes, and it’s been a complete success!

Both of our main photographic targets, the Andean Bear (Tremarctos ornatus) and the Clouded Tiger Cat (Leopardus pardinoides), also known as the Oncilla, were achieved! 🐻🐆

These two elusive Andean species gave us magical encounters, the kind of moments that remind us why we do what we do. I now have hundreds of images to process and share, but my heart is already full of gratitude for everything we’ve witnessed.

We’re already planning our return in 2026… and trust me, there are many exciting surprises ahead!

So proud to be here in Colombia, offering unforgettable wildlife photography tours that bring people closer to the country’s breathtaking biodiversity and the true magic of its wild places. 🌿

09/09/2025

The Andean Bear (Tremarctos ornatus), the only surviving species of short-faced bears, plays a crucial ecological role as an umbrella species in the high Andean ecosystems. Its presence is an indicator of ecosystem health, since it requires extensive, undisturbed habitats to survive.

The páramo, where these bears thrive, is one of the most important hydrological ecosystems in South America. These high-altitude grasslands regulate water cycles, store carbon, and sustain an extraordinary level of endemism. Protecting the Andean Bear therefore ensures the conservation of entire ecological processes that directly benefit human populations, particularly water availability for millions of people.

Ecuador remains one of the few countries where the Andean Bear can still be observed in completely wild conditions. This reality underlines both the urgency and the responsibility of pressing governments and institutions to guarantee long-term, legally binding protection of the páramo and its wildlife in perpetuity.

During our Patagonia Puma Photo Tours, the main focus is on tracking and photographing wild pumas in their natural habitat. However, the region also offers opportunities to encounter other emblematic species, such as the Magellanic Woodpecker.
This species, the largest woodpecker in South America, is only found in the austral temperate old-grown forest of Chile and Argentina. With patience and the right habitat exploration, participants may have the chance to observe and photograph this striking bird.
Encounters like these highlight the incredible biodiversity of Patagonia, making each trip not only about pumas but about a broader wildlife experience.

On our last journey through Patagonia, while tracking pumas, we were surprised by another iconic inhabitant of these southern landscapes: the Austral Pygmy Owl.
This region never ceases to amaze us, not only with unforgettable encounters with pumas, but also with the diversity of wildlife that calls Patagonia home.
