Avenue of Sphinxes, also known as The Sphinx Road or The Road of Rams, is an ancient ceremonial path in the city of Luxor in southern Egypt. It is one of the most important landmarks, connecting the two great temples of Karnak and Luxor. Here’s an explanation of the Avenue:

1. Location
The Avenue of Sphinxes stretches between Karnak Temple in the north and Luxor Temple in the south, covering a distance of about 2.7 kilometers. The road runs through the heart of modern-day Luxor.

2. Name
It is called the Avenue of Sphinxes because the road was lined with statues of sphinxes which have the body of a lion and the head of a human. In some sections of the avenue, the statues are of rams instead of sphinxes, symbolizing the god Amun-Ra.

3. History
The construction of the Avenue began during the reign of the 18th Dynasty and was expanded significantly during the reign of Nectanebo I of the 30th Dynasty (circa 380-362 BC).
The road was used for religious processions, especially during the Opet Festival, a celebration where statues of the gods were carried from Karnak to Luxor in a grand ceremonial procession.

4. Structure
The avenue is flanked by rows of sphinx statues and ram-headed statues. Around 1,200 statues are placed on either side of the road, facing forward in parallel lines.
The sphinxes are carved from sandstone, depicting the body of a lion seated on a large stone base, with inscriptions of the king’s name who ordered the statue to be made.

5. Religious Use
The road was mainly used during religious celebrations, particularly during the Opet Festival, where the statues of the gods Amun, Mut, and Khonsu were carried in sacred boats from Karnak to Luxor. This event symbolized the renewal of kingship and fertility.

6. Rediscovery and Restoration Over centuries, the road was neglected and became buried under sand and modern buildings. In the 20th century, archaeologists began excavating and uncovering parts of the avenue. Restoration efforts have continued for decades, requiring the removal of buildings constructed over it.

7. Reopening
In November 2021, after years of restoration work, the Avenue of Sphinxes was officially reopened in a grand ceremony, reviving its historical importance and making it a prime tourist attraction.

8. Tourist Importance
Today, the Avenue of Sphinxes is one of Luxor’s most famous attractions, drawing thousands of tourists each year. Walking along this road allows visitors to travel back in time to the ancient Pharaohs' era and witness the grand religious processions that once took place between the temples.

The Avenue of Sphinxes is a living testament to the grandeur of ancient Egyptian civilization, reflecting the religious ceremonies and royal processions that connected Egypt’s temples in a symbol of sacredness and royal power.
