My brother just made one of the most common beginner mistakes in points and miles.
He finally got the Chase Sapphire Preferred, one of my favorite starter cards, and proudly told me he booked a flight through the Chase Travel portal.
Here’s why I ALWAYS recommend comparing transfer partners before redeeming your points.
Take this real Hyatt example:
Hotel cash rate: $658/night
Chase Travel Points Boost: 42,482 points
Transfer to Hyatt and book directly: 20,000 Hyatt points
That’s more than DOUBLE the value for the exact same room!
One important update:
* Chase Sapphire Reserve still transfers to Hyatt at 1:1.
* Chase Sapphire Preferred and Ink Preferred transfer at 4:3.
* Bilt’s Hyatt transfer ratio changes to 4:3 in January 2027.
Even at 4:3, you’d only need 27,000 Chase points (transfers are in increments of 1,000).
The takeaway: ALWAYS compare the portal price with airline and hotel transfer partners before redeeming. And never transfer points until you’ve confirmed availability!
