The finest traditions of Welsh arts and crafts are celebrated here in the centre of the bustling market town of Abergavenny. Our Gallery showcases the work of members of the Black Mountains Circle Ltd and their guests. As well as high-quality, collectable art and craft work, there are special monthly exhibitions and a growing schedule of workshops. Each time you visit you will be greeted by one or two of our artists/makers who are always on hand for a friendly chat and to offer help.

This coming weekend is the Abergavenny Food Festival. As always, our expert ceramicist and window-dresser, Jane, does a terrific job of making the window link to the theme of the food festival. This year, she's taken the theme of 'Al-fresco'. Think picnics, birds clearing up the stray crumbs from a magnificent Victoria Sponge Cake - you get the idea.

Now, I took some photos of the windows in order to show you how brilliant they were but you know what happens when you photograph windows? That's right, you get a reflection of everything else in the street, too: there was a nice reflection of the italian restaurant across the street, and also a queue of cars waiting to pull out of the opposite road. Neither of those things helped my photos.

So, I have managed to salvage two of the pictures which don't do the window justice! What's the answer to this dilemma? Go and see it for yourself 😉

Today, we'd like to showcase the work of woodturner, Peter Dixon.

Peter originally turned to wood urning to destress from an intense job. He has since retired from that job and now spends his time creating wood art.

Woodturning is the foundation to all of his pieces but over the years he has developed skills in a range of other techniques and materials to enhance and build on the initial turned item. Peter considers himself lucky to have access to locally sourced woods of unusual character and colour. Sometimes this is enough in its own right, sometimes he may add carved and pierced features, apply texturing, scorching and pyrography techniques, stains and acrylics to achieve the final piece of “woodart”.

Have a go at this little thought experiment: imagine a world without colour. Imagine what you'd see when you opened the curtains in the morning, if there was no colour.

Admittedly, sometimes when we open the curtains it can seem a bit grey, particularly in the deep winter, but mostly, there's the greens of the grass and landscape, the vibrancy of the flowers and sunlight and the wash of blue in the sky or the soft yellow of the first primrose.

This is all very poetic but hopefully it's shown you why colour is so important. And (queue segue...) you can see lots of it in the artwork in our gallery. Whether it's vibrant glass or landscapes, colourful wood vases and jewellery, or a soft pastel wash on ceramics, we have it all.

Visitors to our gallery will know that we have two floors of beautiful artwork. Yes, you read that right: two whole floors.

Here is a collection of work you will find on the ground floor - it is a mere snippet, as there is a great deal more but this is to whet your appetite. Just this small selection shows ceramics, basketry, jewellery, wooden sculptures, Welsh Love Spoons and a gorgeous Welsh landscape.

This all looks much better in the flesh so do pop in and see for yourself. Oh, and don't forget to go upstairs afterwards 😉

As a follower to our page, you will know that each week, we showcase one of our members and this week, we are featuring the work of watercolour artist Tracey-Anne Sitch

Tracey-Anne paints natural history; primarily British wildlife for which she has a special passion. She enjoys working in tight detail (not easy in this challenging medium), and in differing styles, which varies from simple portraits of the subject on a white background to elaborately patterned ‘frame-breaking’ paintings. Composition and a strong narrative, plus illustrating the character and behaviour of the subjects, are more important to her than realism.

As well as exhibiting locally and in national exhibitions, Tracey-Anne has also published four illustrated books and sells limited edition prints, cards, mugs and other gift items all decorated with her images of our beautiful native flora and fauna.

The detail in Tracey-Anne's work is incredible and has to be seen to be believed. You know what to do 😉

For a lot of artists' materials, there is so much that can be done with them. As an excellent example, let's look at textiles.

This array of artwork is currently on display at the gallery; some of it is from our long-standing members, and some of it is from the textiles visiting exhibition which is on in our upstairs gallery. If you look at these photos, you will see the sheer range of possibilities in this medium: teddy bears, pots, weaving, felting, picture artwork made solely from fabric.

Even if you aren't a textile creator yourself (and yours truly is most certainly not), you can appreciate the standard of artistry in all this work. It's just beautiful. Come and look - you won't regret your visit!

The range of workshops held in the gallery is increasing, and to prove it, we have another brand new one for you: Painting in Stained Glass.

Come and learn the ancient craft of painting in stained glass, using vitreous paints, enamels and silver stain. Whilst the course is suited to those with some experience of cutting glass, it may be possible to accommodate some beginners.

The class is to be run by our fabulous stained glass artist, Annie Kemp. If you've seen her work in our gallery, you will see she is absolutely the perfect person to teach you this craft.

Followers to our page will know that once a week, we like to showcase an individual artist and maker from our gallery.

This week, we are featuring the work of ceramicist, Mary Watkins, a ceramic artist who creates beautifully characterful figures in her home studio.

Originally trained in painting, Mary discovered her love of clay after retiring from teaching and attending pottery classes. Largely self-taught, she has continued to develop her skills through classes and demonstrations from South Wales Potters, of which she has been a member for many years.

Her work focuses on people and animals, with a particular aim to capture not just how they look, but something of their personality and character. Each piece is individually hand-built using different clays and techniques, then carefully decorated and fired.

The result is a stunning collection of sculptures, which you can see here. Mary's work is understandably very popular and can be found in our upstairs gallery.

Let's talk about purple!

💜Purple was once so expensive to produce that only the very wealthy, or those of royal status could afford it. It apparently took the ink of 250,000 tiny snails to make one ounce of the dye 🐌
🟣In the 19th century, technology in the form of chemical synthesis brought an affordable purple to the people - thank goodness for that!
🟪According to colour psychology, purple is associated with wit, keen observation, sensitivity, vanity...and moodiness (this is according to the 'Complete Pantone Colour Harmony book - who am I to argue 😁)

Purple is also often preferred by artists or people who support the arts and guess what?! Here is the evidence: A range of purples in a range of artworks from painting, to felting, to needlework, to enamelling, to silversmithing and to glasswork, all in our fabulous gallery.

So, don your royal cloaks and come and have a look for yourself. (Note: no snails were harmed in this post...)

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, as we know. Art and craft is very subjective and thank goodness for that as it means there really is something for everyone.

Some like huge pieces of art I mean, I guess if you are an owner of Amazon, or a space rocket, say, then you probably want something really big in your really big house. And of course, we do have big works of art, but if your space for such things is much smaller, then we've got you covered.

Here is a selection of small things: a wooden pen, some ceramic pots, a brooch, a candle snuffer, a small red squirrel, a small ceramic hare hanging. All small, and beautiful, just waiting to fill the small little niche you have at home...or your space rocket.
