We all love the big cathedrals and the grand statement pieces, but Escomb Saxon Church has something they cannot fake - age, simplicity and real presence. Built in the late 7th century, it is one of the earliest and most complete Anglo-Saxon churches in England, and it still feels quietly extraordinary.

No drama, no showiness, just beautiful old stone, a tiny churchyard, and well over 1,300 years of history sitting there in County Durham. That is hard to beat.
