New Overseas Installation Completed in Japan 🌏

We’re proud to share our latest installation of a compact 55kW Turgo turbine for a small run-of-river hydropower project in Japan. The installation was expertly led by our experienced fitting supervisor, working in close collaboration with a skilled local team.

The Gilkes-designed compact Turgo is engineered for reliability and ease of use, making it an ideal solution for delivering sustainable, low-impact renewable energy to local communities.

Japan has a long history of small hydropower development, which continues to play a vital role in the country’s renewable energy strategy and local energy self-sufficiency. Gilkes has been a trusted supplier of small hydro turbines to Japan since the 1980s, and we remain committed to supporting key developers with new installations.

Today, we pause to remember VE Day — marking the end of World War II in Europe on May 8, 1945.

On this day, we express our gratitude to all the veterans who showed courage, sacrifice, and resilience, fighting for freedom and peace during the Second World War.

At Gilkes, we honour the memory of two of our former engineers who bravely served their Country after leaving their roles with us to join the war effort.

Richard Ruthven Nelson, Engine Room Artificer (Royal Navy) HMS Campbeltown - died 28 March 1942, 23 yrs old.  Killed during the St Nazaire Raid during Operation Chariot, a planned assault on the Normandie dry dock using the explosive laden H.M.S Campbeltown warship. Of the 611 men in the raiding force, 169 were killed and 215 taken prisoner once they ran out of ammunition. The fighting was so severe that five Victoria Crosses and many other bravery medals were awarded that day.

William Johnson Howson, Warrant Officer/Radio Operator (Royal Air Force) - died 3d February 1945, 25 yrs old. Killed whilst bombing the Prosper benzol plant as aircraft was shot down by a night-fighter. William was a draughtsman for Gilkes and his last entry in drawing records in 1940, along with a paper cutting announcing his death can been seen in one of the images.

☀️ A fantastic day in the sunshine for the Graham O'Callaghan Shield match ⚽️ between Anord Mardix and Gilkes on Sunday!

It was a close game, but Gilkes clinched a 3–2 victory. This now-annual fixture continues to be a great opportunity for both companies and their families to come together, socialise, and enjoy some friendly competition.

👏 Congratulations to the Gilkes team on their well-earned win!

Our engineers were on site last week completing the commissioning of a 1956 Gilkes Turgo turbine, now fully modernised and upgraded for continued service.

Originally rated at 56kW, this heritage turbine has undergone a comprehensive refurbishment to enhance reliability, longevity, and control. The scope of work includes:

⚙️ A fully engineered and designed solution
🔌 New power & control cabling
🧠 Upgraded controls and governing systems for improved responsiveness
🔄 Future-ready generator stored on-site
🏡 Locally generated power supports the estate directly

This project will ensure efficient and sustainable operation for years to come.
Well done to the Gilkes Engineering team for delivering another outstanding upgrade! 💪
