ZAWADI’S RESCUE STORY

When Samburu women discovered this tiny giraffe all alone, this brave little girl was only about five days old! It is suspected that her mother left her somewhere safe in the bush before setting off in search of grazing, but that the baby got curious and then started wandering off.

It’s not uncommon for giraffes and gazelles to do this with their young – and they often leave them in small groups while searching for food. Sadly, in times of drought, the wait is sometimes so long that the young ones become impatient and restless, and they may wander off and and become separated from their mothers.

Thankfully, the local Samburu women quickly alerted Reteti, and a rescue plan was launched! Zawadi – which means “gift” in Samburu – was welcomed with open arms and hearts at the sanctuary soon after, and for everyone here, it was love at first sight. Once widespread, giraffe numbers have dropped by over 50% in the last few decades due to poaching, habitat loss, and drought. Today, with fewer than 16,000 wild Reticulated Giraffes left on Earth, protecting baby giraffes like Zawadi is vital for their survival as well as maintaining healthy savannah ecosystems.

The Sarara Foundation and Reteti Elephant Sanctuary work hand in hand with Samburu communities to safeguard these gentle giants through rangeland restoration, anti-poaching patrols, and community-led rescue and care for orphaned giraffes, proving that people and wildlife can and will flourish side by side in this precious landscape.

Happy World Sea Turtle Day! In the wild, a very small percentage of sea turtle hatchlings survive to adulthood, with estimates ranging from one in 1,000 to one in 10,000. This low survival rate is due to high mortality rates among hatchlings and juveniles, even in optimal conditions. Human activities, such as pollution and climate change, are further exacerbating these challenges for sea turtles. Good luck to all the hatchlings heading to the sea. 🐢

On May 20th, we celebrate World Bee Day! 🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝

Human / elephant conflict is a huge problem in Africa with elephants destroying crops. Throughout Africa bees are being used as a natural deterrent with bee hives suspended on wires around the crops and deter the elephants from their foraging and provides extra income for the farmers by harvesting the honey. It’s a win win situation for all involved.

Please get in touch if you would like to visit elephants in their natural environment in the national parks!
Bee happy by tasting the delicious wild honey from the African honeybees when on safari. 🐝
