Marian Feast Day
8th September- The Nativity of Our Lady

Even though we cannot trace the celebration of the Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary back any further than the sixth century, the source for the story of the birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary is much older. The earliest documented version is found in the Protoevangelium of James, an apocryphal gospel written about A.D. 150.
From the Protoevangelium of James, we learn the names of Mary's parents, Joachim and Anna, as well as the tradition that the couple was childless until an angel appeared to Anna and told her that she would conceive.

Prayer

Heavenly Child, lovable Mary, the Eternal Father delights in your birth, for He beholds in your coming into this world one of His creatures who is so perfect that she will become the worthy Mother of His divine Son.
May your birth give joy to my soul also, by obtaining for me from the heavenly Father, the pardon of my sins, and an abiding sorrow for them.

Celebrating Our 40th Anniversary Pilgrimage

Bookings are now open for the St Jude Lourdes Pilgrimage 2027.
There are a limited number of overland places available, travelling by coach, and these are expected to fill quickly. A paid deposit will secure your place.
At present, flight details are not yet available. Once these have been confirmed, we will advise pilgrims of the route that the majority of our group will be using.
5-night stay (including pilgrimage fee): £415 - Depending on your chosen method of travel to Lourdes, you can book more or less of nights depending on your requirements.
Single supplement: £30 per night

O most beautiful Flower of Mount Carmel, fruitful vine, splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in this my necessity. O Star of the Sea, help me and show me herein that you are my Mother.

O Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart, to succor me in this my necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. O show me herein that you are my Mother.

The Eighteenth Apparition
Bernadette Says Farewell
16th July 1858

On 4 June 1858 Bernadette receives her First Holy Communion. When asked whether communion or the apparitions were more special, she replies, “The two things go together, but cannot be compared. I was very happy in both.”

It is now time for Bernadette to grow smaller and for the miracle of Lourdes to grow bigger, with hundreds of thousands of people coming in pilgrimage, obeying the commands of Our Lady.

But she does say goodbye to the Holy Virgin. On the feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, she feels the Virgin calling her. This time, to avoid the crowds, she goes by a different route, one which takes her onto the meadow on the other side of the river from the Grotto.

It is evening. The Grotto is boarded up by order of the prefect. Bernadette is disguised and hidden. They light a candle. Bernadette is pale and in ecstasy. She kneels and says the rosary.

This is the last time Bernadette sees Our Lady on this earth.

While there is sadness in this final apparition, Bernadette’s life in the other world of grace and sanctity, that promised to her by Our Lady in the third apparition, is now firmly established.

“Mary never looked more beautiful” says Bernadette after the apparition.
“But how were you able to see at such a distance, and with the barrier?”
“I saw neither the planks of wood, nor the River Gave. It was as if I was in the Grotto, at the same distance as the other times. I only saw the Holy Virgin.” Bernadette

Through Bernadette, we were offered a new moment of salvation – on her "yes" hung the whole divine plan to bring renewal to the Church. She brings a gift to the Church in the same way as St John the Apostle did. From the Cross, Jesus gave Our Lady to St John, telling him “to make a place in his home for her.” Because of the apparitions in Lourdes, Our Lady is honoured throughout the world – there are churches dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes in every corner of the globe.

Today is the Feast of Our Lady of Aberdeen

Standing high in a side chapel of a Brussels church is one of Scotland’s treasures, a statue of Our Lady and Child which was saved from destruction in Aberdeen during the Reformation. For sixty-five years it was hidden until it was shipped to safety in the Low Countries. The statue remained in the Augustinian church in Brussels until 1796, when it was again removed for protection, this time to escape the ravages of the French Revolution.
Safely restored to the Augustinians in 1805, it remained in their care as an object of devotion until 1814, when it was removed to the neighbouring Church of Our Lady of Finisterre. It is still venerated there as Our Lady of Good Success.
In Scotland, devotion to Our Lady focusing on copies of this ancient statue has spread, and 9th July is now reserved as the feast of Our Lady of Aberdeen.

the joy of continued health of mind and body and through the intercession of Blessed Mary, ever-virgin,
free us of this present sadness
and fill us with eternal joy.

Evening Prayer

Sign of the Cross
In the name of the Father who created me, the Son who set me free, and the Holy Spirit who sustains me. Amen.

Examination of Conscience
Lord, who hast redeemed me through thy blood, And sanctified me to do good forgive my sins, O Father God. Purge all my sins done heretofore, For I confess my heavy score, and I will strive to sin no more: Have mercy on me, Son of God. Enrich my heart, mouth, and hands with faith, with hope, and with charity, that I may run, rise, rest with thee: Breathe life into me, Spirit Lord.

Thanksgiving
When I call, answer me, O God of justice; from anguish you released me, have mercy and hear me. O men, how long will your hearts be closed, will you love what is futile and seek what is false? As the 39th Saint Jude Lourdes Pilgrimage draws to a close, the organising team would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our pilgrims who travelled with us this year, as well as those who joined us virtually, without our pilgrims we cannot fulfil the request of Our Lady “to come in procession”.

We would also like to offer our heartfelt thanks to all those who contributed to making this pilgrimage such a special and prayerful experience.
Our gratitude goes to Fr John Gannon, our Spiritual Director, and to Fr Stephen Hannah for their spiritual guidance and pastoral care throughout the pilgrimage. We are also deeply grateful to Michelle, our Pilgrimage Assistant, for her dedicated support of our air travel pilgrims.
A special word of thanks goes to our Pilgrimage Helpers — Anne, Aiden, Karen and Greg — whose hard work, commitment and willingness to serve ensured that everything ran smoothly. We also thank everyone who embraced our "Be Involved" roles and helped foster the spirit of participation and community that lies at the heart of our pilgrimage.
Our appreciation extends to Oliver, our Altar Server; Derek and Phillip from our Transport Team; Catherine and Tommy for leading our Music Ministry; and Cathie and Trisha for their care through our Hospitality Team.
To everyone who gave their time, talents and energy in any way, whether seen or unseen, thank you. Your generosity and dedication helped create a pilgrimage filled with faith, friendship and joy.
We would like to offer particular thanks to Alexander and Chloe, whose outstanding work as our TikTok creators brought the pilgrimage experience to life for so many people. Through their creativity and enthusiasm, they helped share Lourdes and the Saint Jude Lourdes Pilgrimage with audiences far beyond our usual reach, allowing many more people to feel connected to our pilgrimage family.
As we reflect on the many graces and blessings received during SJLP 2026, we do so with grateful hearts and renewed faith. While we are already looking forward to returning to Lourdes in 2027, we hope to see many of you before then at our Pilgrimage Reunion on Saturday, 3 October 2026, at St Philomena's, Royston Road.

May Our Lady of Lourdes continue to watch over and guide us all until we meet again.

Oh God our Father, we come before you as pilgrims, seeking the intercession and guidance of your beloved saints.

Saint Jude, patron of the impossible, we turn to you with hearts burdened by challenges and trials. Help us to find hope in despair, strength in weakness, and courage in the face of doubt.

Saint Bernadette, humble visionary of Lourdes, you who experienced the gentle touch of Our Lady, guide us in our pilgrimage of faith. Help us to recognise the sacredness of every encounter and the profound beauty hidden in the ordinary moments of life.

Our Lady of Lourdes, Immaculate Mother of God, who appeared to Bernadette at the grotto, we entrust our petitions to your loving care. As you comforted Bernadette in her suffering, console us in our trials and grant us the grace of healing, both physical and spiritual.

Sign of the Cross and Praise of God
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. I will praise you, my God and bless your name for ever. Every day I will call on you and bless your name for ever. Great is the Lord and worthy of all praise. I will declare your greatness, Lord, and bless your name for ever. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning. is now, and ever shall be, world without end, Amen.

The Word of God
The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. “The Lord is my portion,” says my soul, “therefore I will hope in him. The Lord is good to those who wait for him, to the soul that seeks him. It is good that one should wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord. (Pause for reflection)
