Continuing my mini series…

Tony Bramwell

Tony was a British music industry executive and author.

He was born in Liverpool, and was best known for his close association with The Beatles and their inner circle.

A childhood friend of the band members, he grew up alongside George Harrison and Paul McCartney, and later became a key figure in Brian Epstein’s management company, NEMS Enterprises, and worked closely with Brian Epstein as The Beatles’ fame exploded.

He became a promotions and tour manager for the band and played a crucial behind-the-scenes role, including in film production, music video direction, and promotion.

He worked at Apple Corps, The Beatles’ multimedia company, where he helped oversee music videos and, after The Beatles disbanded, continued working in the music industry.

Tony worked with and/ or promoted other major acts like James Taylor, Harry Nilsson, Elton John, and Bruce Springsteen.

He was often seen in and around Liverpool and was always very generous with his time meeting fans (including me!) and I’ll always remember him as a very jovial and funny man.

Sadly, Tony passed away in 2024 aged 78.

Here we are pictured in 2017 at The Woolton Village Fete on the 60th anniversary of when John and Paul first met.

Please feel free to comment and to add your memories of Tony too.

Hiya Beatles Buddies!

Due to many requests from friends, followers and Mop Top Tour guests, I’ve finally decided to (try to!) properly document some of the many photos I’ve collected over the years, so there’s an actual historical record based on my research and personal experiences.

So here goes, I hope you enjoy following the journey and please feel free to add your comments and, indeed, contributions…..

Barry Chang

Barry Chang was the brother of Beryl
Williams, the wife of The Beatles' agent
Allan Williams.

In August 1960, a young and emerging Beatles lineup (John, Paul, George, Stuart, and newly recruited drummer Pete Best) embarked on their first trip to Hamburg under Allan's guidance.

The group travelled in Allan's cramped green
Austin minibus, along with Beryl, Barry, and Lord Woodbine (nicknamed because of his love of Woodbine ci******es !).

Barry wasn't just a passenger, he was the co-driver alongside Allan Williams. He also took the only known photos capturing key moments of that historic journey.

It was this aforementioned minibus that carried them, notably over a ferry via crane, en route through the Hook by Holland and via Arnhem before reaching Hamburg.

Barry vividly described the journey and his creative improvisations, including:

Stopping at a newsagent in the Hook of Holland to rip newspaper letters to spell “THE BEATLES" and sticking them inside the van's windows, using spit, to ensure the band's identity stood out during the journey and their arrival in Hamburg.

These personal touches and his presence behind the lens give his photographs both historical value and character.

The photos show:

The minibus being hoisted by crane at Harwich en route to the ferry, the striking moment that launched The Beatles' German adventure.

The Beatles gathered around the Arnhem
Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery cenotaph, standing beside the inscription “Their name liveth forever more."

Stevie T pictured with Barry, August 2024, on a chance encounter outside The Casbah Coffee Club.

On this meeting I asked Barry about his famous Arnhem War Memorial photo and if he could confirm why John wasn’t in the picture. Barry laughed and told me the rumours were true, and that John was, indeed, in a nearby music shop, shoplifting a harmonica!

Lennon stole a Hohner Marine Band harmonica, a model that would later define the sound of early Beatles songs like “Love Me Do” and “Please Please Me.”

Interesting story Beatles Buddies 😊

Had the most moptopatabulous time with Alan and Karen from Matlock 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 - although Alan is actually a Scouser and we LOVE it when even the locals choose us to look after them.

Alan (who’s 82!) shared lots of lovely memories- in between joining in with all the antics 😂

Today we remember Brian Epstein, The Beatles’ manager, who sadly passed away on this day in 1967.

Brian’s vision and business savvy transformed four lads from Liverpool into the most famous band in the world. Yet above his entrepreneurial spirit, it was his generosity that truly shone for those who knew him.

Rest in peace, Brian 🕊️

Thrilled to bits to receive this lovely message from one of our recent tour guests, fabulous and very interesting pictures too 👍

Hi Stevie T.

We fondly remember the Mop Top Tour with you. It was fantastic and an unforgettable time. I'm enclosing photos. Christian was a huge Beatles fan as a child. He kept a notebook with newspaper articles and drawings. It's remarkable that he did this in East Germany.

Regards from
Christian, Dorothea, Charlotte und Helene

I’m enjoying International Beatles Week so much, I can’t get enough of The Beatles! So much so, I decided tonight to rewatch our mini documentary about Brian Epstein. And you know what, for an amateur production and looking back on it now, I think it’s pretty good and hats off to my buddy Pino for producing it.

If you haven’t seen it, you can watch it for free here (remember to like and follow the channel too!)
