⚔️ On this day, 14 October 1066, the Battle of Hastings took place right here in English soil.
I spent last Sunday walking that exact ridge, soaking in the pre-battle tension in the Saxon camp, and watching the drama unfold as the weather turned just in time for the shield walls to clash!
Seeing it all in person changed how I look at the Bayeux Tapestry - and I can't wait to share the story with you.

Congratulations to the new Lord Mayor 🥳

Alderman Bronek Masojada has been elected as the 698th Lord Mayor of the City of London. He will succeed Lady Mayor Dame Susan Langley DBE and take office at the Silent Ceremony at Guildhall on 13 November.

Bronek spent 28 years at insurance giant Hiscox, including 21 years as Group Chief Executive, and has served as Alderman for the Ward of Billingsgate since 2019. He was also a Sheriff of the City of London in 2023/24.

As Lord Mayor, he will act as an international ambassador for the UK's financial and professional services sector and continue the work of connecting talent and capital with opportunity.

Number 3 reminds me of the three most important women since 1189:

Mary Donaldson, Baroness of Lymington, the first female Lord Mayor (1983),
Dame Fiona Woolf, the second female Lord Mayor (2003),
Dame Susan Langley, the current Lady Mayor, 697th person to be the head of the City of London since Henry FitzAilwyn became the first Mayor of London.

In 1215 King John, in the Mayoralty Charter, gave the right to the City of London Corporation to elect its Mayors (later Lord Mayors) for the period of one year. Until 1983 they were all men.

I have just come across an article beautifully explaining a quote by a hero of mine, Marie Curie.
She was born in Warsaw, Poland, spent her life in France working so hard on radioactivity that she would forget to eat for days and was the first woman to win Nobel Prize, and the only woman to win it twice in two different fields: physics & chemistry.
She discovered radium and polonium, whose names she came up with and were (and still are) connected with her mother country. Radium comes from Polish "rad" and "radość" meaning happy and happiness. Polonium - from "Polonia", a Latin word for Poland.
She died from severe, long-term health damage caused by decades of exposure to radiation. She gave her life to science.
Four years earlier she sent her best wishes to a newly opened hospital at 66 Fitzjohn' Avenue in London named after her. The hospital was staffed only by women and specialized in radium and X-ray therapies for cervical and other cancers. Its legacy led to founding 🌼
