Anne will be exploring Smithfield's long and often bloody history on Sunday 15th November. Spared by the Great Fire of London, this is the city's most ancient area where you can see the historic meat market, London's oldest church and the country's oldest hospital. As a large open space outside the city walls, Smithfield was also a place of fairs, livestock markets and executions.

Few animals are worthy of a statue, but a cat named Hodge, a pet of the great 18th century literary figure, Dr Samuel Johnson, is an exception.

After all, as Johnson once exclaimed to his biographer, James Boswell, the oyster l loving Hodge was "a very fine cat, a very fine cat indeed!'.

We are taking a walk on the dark side for our next Thursday Night Walking Club walk on 29th October. The Dark Side of Spitalfields. Walk in the footsteps of the victims of the Whitechapel murderer, hear their stories, and discover what made Spitalfields the throbbing dark heart of Victorian London’s infamous slum. Ludgate was one of the original six City gates going back to Roman times. These controlled access and trade coming into the Square Mile for centuries. However, in the 18th century Ludgate, along with most of the other gates, were demolished to ease traffic congestion in the City.

A few well-known artefacts that once stood on Ludgate were retained and can now be found hard by the church of St Dunstan-in-the-West on Fleet Street. However, something else survived, and is hiding in plain sight close by where it used to stand as part of the Ludgate.

If you are looking for something really special to do in London, then why not join London City Mouse Tours as we team up with Temple Bar to have a look behind the scenes in St Paul's Cathedral?

The evening begins in St. Paul’s at 5.00pm with Choral Evensong, an opportunity to hear the Cathedral’s world famous choir.

Once everyone has left the building, your guide will give you a private tour of the Cathedral to parts not usually open to the public.

Your visit will begin by ascending the winding staircase to the Triforium, the gallery high above the nave. Highlights include the model of St. Paul’s made by Sir Christopher Wren for King Charles ll, a copy of William Tyndale’s 1526 Bible, one of only three in existence, and the iconic ‘Harry Potter’ staircase.

You will enjoy one of the most spectacular views of the cathedral, and one that most visitors do not have the opportunity to see.

After the tour, we visit Temple Bar, Wren’s smallest building, and the last surviving gateway to the City of London for a talk on the building with drinks.

Nearly a hundred years ago, the world's first interplanetary telegram was sent. It started its journey in the City of London when a Dr Hugh Mansfield Robinson asked for a three word message to be transmitted... to Mars!

No-one knew what the three words meant, but a job's a job, and the Central Telegraph Office on St Martin's Le Grand saw to it that Robinson's message was sent on its way.
