The Freedom of the City of London is an ancient and unique part of London’s history, and one to which a very chuffed City Mouse has now been admitted. The cherry on top was the fact that her Freedom Certificate is signed by two women - the Lady Mayor Susan Langley and Chamberlain Caroline Al-Beyerty.
While Lianne is not too fussed about the loss of some of the privileges once afforded to Freemen, e.g. being hung by a silken rope or wandering around with a drawn sword - she will be taking a sheep over Southwark Bridge in September. Having watched Andy dodge the sheep poo last year when he exercised his Freeman’s rights, she knows not to wear her high heels.

Temple Bar is the last surviving gateway into the City of London. Reputedly designed by Sir Christopher Wren, this Baroque archway dates from 1672, and is made of Portland stone. It used to stand at the entrance to the City where Fleet Street meets the Strand. However, since 2004 it has stood on Paternoster Square adjacent to St Paul's Cathedral.

Every May a liveryman from the Worshipful Company of Architects oils the hinges of the Temple Bar gates. For the last couple of years the act of oiling now has echoes of the State Opening of Parliament with assorted liverymen, the Lord or Lady Mayor's Bodyguard and curious visitors in attendance.

The Oiling the Gates ceremony is now a worthy addition to the Square Mile's calendar of rich pageantry. If you're around the City in May look out for the City of London's newest 'ancient' tradition.

No. 5 New Bridge Street, just off Fleet Street, in the City of London, is a rather unassuming building. However, it was once at the epicentre of a media firestorm in Victorian London.

During the late summer of 1888, a series of brutal murders of women in the East End of London had caused consternation amongst the general public. On 27 September that year a letter, in red ink, had arrived at No.5, then the home of the Central News Agency, purporting to be from the killer.

Beginning "Dear Boss" the letter's author went on to mock the police's inability to catch him, boasted of his murderous exploits and promised to keep going. It was signed off with a moniker never before seen: "Jack the Ripper".
